Hezbear
You can put some bait out for them, peanut butter or liquidised cat food is good, anything they can't pick up and take away is good. A tin of sardines with a few holes in the lid also works A lamp and red filter will do for them Edited November 2, 2009 by Hezbear

hunter1970
a dumb question, but whats the red filter for ?its a red lens that goes over the front of the lamp..gives a red light instead of a bright white light..rats dont seem to mind the red for the first couple of outings but they soon get used to it .. Colster
a dumb question, but whats the red filter for ? A lot of animals will associate white light with a human prescence (ie danger). With a filter the animal won't "necessarily" spook when it sees a red (or other colour) light. Red seems to be the colour that most of us can see better with, as opposed to blue, green or amber but sometimes you may have to switch colours if you shoot a certain place repeatedly as your quarry may become wary when they see red light now. bruno22rf
I think you are about to learn why the Rat is such a prolific pest-stupid they aint.Using an air rifle is a fun way of picking a few off but i doubt that you will reduce their numbers significantly. My shooting buddy and myself used to visit a farm every Friday night for 3-4 hours armed with semi automatic 9mm garden guns, maglites on top and laser pointers clamped to the barrels-some nights we would kill over a hundred but after over 2 years we had to admit defeat and put down 50kg of rat poison-within a month the population was again out of control and we withdrew and left them to the council who removed the livestock from the farm and thus the rats food source. We had a lot of fun with them though! Clubshot
Another Light source is to Shoot around a Light Source Most Stables have a Security light - Bait that Area Saves the needs for Shooting Lights But never forget that Rat Fluid - Blood and Pee is one of the most Dangerous Fluids to Man & Beast Alway's use Tongs / Gloves to pick up Rats and Wash down Blood splattered Walls etc As do not want Silly Dogs or cat's smelling and licking Area Also Not forgetting Rat's best form of Defence is to Attack ............ Reason I alway's use a multi Shot Rifle BOB/R
