I am doing up on of my guns and used one of the 'do it yourself' cold blue kits on the barrels. Un-surprisingly it aint that good (and I may have royally ****** it up) and need a gunsmith in the South East Essex area to sort it out (totally reblue the barrel's). Anyone know of someone good?:good:

these kits do work pal, it just requires a lot of elbow grease and the right application with plenty of time for lots and lots of applications, when i first tried to do it everything went patchy ! i was trying to do to much in one go! pays to take your time and do little by little , heating slightly and rinsing after each application, and wirewooling the hell out of it . its just a case of getting the knack of it . but its still not the same as a hot black and not as long lasting by any means of the imagination. have another go pal you cant really do any damage . and just try doing a little at a time without leaving the chemicals on to long before rinsing.. best of luck pal ....

thanks mate, just put a comment on the other topic about what you said on cold blueing!! I did alot prep work but only a few coats before thinking this was as good as its was going to get. Will give it another try!!

hey thats what i thought the first time ! it wasnt until a few lads explained to me a few times what i was doing wrong and what helps. the heat is a good trick, but dont over do it just warm thats all it needs and try and keep the time its exposed to the air down to a min whilst the chemicals are working, and the wire wooling part is a right boring repetative task along with blueing, but !! it will work trust me , its just about effort and time. if its for a nice bit of kit that you value and you have little time to spare id say leave it to the gunsmith, the amount of time i spent each time doing it i thought never again  and the finish will never match a proper job where the chaps have the right kit for the job, (as in vats of chemicals heated just right) with the knowledge of using them thrown in....... your pays ya money ya take your choice
