Cosd
They don't eat Winter Barley until it gets laid in June / July next year. Cat. I'm with Cat on this. I tried relentlessly to shoot winter Barley, other than odd shots here and there the woodies were not interested.
Cookiemonsterandmerlin.
Not quite true birds do feed on it but I have not seen birds on it for 20 or so years in this area witlshire oxfordshire. It use to be a regular crop to shot over before rape just read a copy of archie coates books. He had shot many birds on winter barley in his early shooting life are just leaving the army. They really only use to get on it in very hard weather as barley is very prone to being burnt by cold winds. It depends where you are in the uk and if you have rape ctops within 25 miles on you. Catamong
Yep, I can only speak for my area, nobody knows where OTH hails from, it may be different in his area, but where I live, they won't touch it. Cat.
Whitebridges
It is possible to decoy birds on to winter barley if you are close to a flightline, birds have been sitting in the field or they have been feeding on say acorns or mast around the edges. They don't like eating new green barley though. Edited December 9, 2009 by Whitebridges
George1990
Haven't seen any on winter wheat either (not sure it it's wheat or barley come to think of it). Very annoying as I got permission on it last year, and now have to wait till the summer beofre I can use it again. If they're flying low over the field somewhere else they'll come in. I'm on wheat stubble (which I've got till they put maize in in April time) and they aren't necessarily feeding on it, but come into the sitty trees. Often they veer over the decoys for a look before landing in the trees behind, which gives some fun shooting. So it could be worth it. I'll give it a go and let you know how it pans out. Got a load more new decoys coming in the post too.
