kyska
Hi guys, I'm off to buy myself a .22 lr tomorrow, I have the .17 but want the .22 for lamping around a certain area, well thats my excuse anyway. I've been offered the following, any advice would be much appreciated. First dealer A laminate .22 savage, I had a savage BTVS a while back and got rid of it, but mainly because it was too long, didn't get on with the thumbhole stock, this one is a 'normal' stock, and it all feels very nice. £290 without mod/scope or mounts, in very good condition 2nd Dealer Has offered a .22 HW60, scoped and modded, not sure of condition for £300. Money isn't an issue to a degree, I have a CZ and would like something different but can't stretch much more than this.
njc110381
I'd buy the HW60j if it was tidy enough. I've heard that they are very good rifles :look:
Bobbo.
Do you have a Mossberg dealer near you? You can get a model 817 new for less than £300. Check out here, http://www.guns.gb.com
gibby
The HW60 was my first .22, since sold and wish I hadn't. Superb rifle, but my god it gets heavy after some time. Gibby
Fat Dog
Can't speak for the Savage, but can tell you that you won't go far wrong with the HW60J in .22, love mine to bits.

Thanks all. After a phone call the HW is 'well used' in good condition but has had a lot put through it, does this matter to much in a rimfire? No problems with a rimfire shooting lots of ammo

kyska
Thanks for all the feedback guys, I looked at both, the HW was 'very' well used, and the scope wasn't much cop so I decied on the Savage Mk11, its lovely looking, not a mark on it and the action felt good.... Anyway, got fully set up for the .22, ready to go for lamping. The point of my reply is a conversation in the pub this evening, you know the walter mitty types of conversation. Joined my brother in law for a pint and he exclaimed that I shouldn't of bought a rifle because we have a mutual RFD friend who had just been to an auction and tried to get hold of me to buy a .22 CZ at a silly price, I missed out, would've saved a lot of money from today...oh well. Guy at the bar, who I know sort of, heard the conversation and got chatting. After a brief conversation he was telling me how he has his .22 zeroed at 100 yards for rabbits, which to be honest, being new to this game thought was a bit far, I only just nudge the 100 yard range with my HMR, but need a quieter gun for reasons on some patches of my land. He then went on to tell me he can take fox out easily at 80 with it, now here is the crux, he has 'quick release' scope mounts to 'go to iron sights' for fox, does anyone have these? The conversation went on and when he mentioned his rifle is a Ripley I asked him if he was actually talking about an airgun (I have air, I love it, not offence to airgunners!) and he said yes, charged to 3000psi, runs at 21ft/lb and drops fox at 80 yards. This is on my life a true conversation this evening. I'm impressed, you should be too by the sounds of it, I'm thinking of getting rid of the rimmies and go back to air. I was also told if I fill my third slot (.22 fac air) I will need a RFD ticket, too many guns according to him.
Luckyshot
You would be better off not listening to guy's at the bar if thats what they are telling you and speak to someone who knows what they are talking about. Check out everybodys guns on here most people own more than 3 on their FAC and not many will have RFD status.

As long as hes buying the pints, nod your head and lavish praise on him.If hes a tight ***,as most southern folk are(whats that?contraversial you say?) then fight fire with fire and just say you match all that and add on another 20 yards to your shots.By the end of the night he will be trying to beat you by telling you about the time he lamped a T-Rex and had to take it out with an elastic band and a bit of chewed paper.
