poorpeet
Hi, I have done a search but can't find the info. So, can anyone help? I read on here a while ago that Baikal o/u were imported with full and 1/2 choke & that the importer could shorten the barrel by set amounts at achieive the desired choke size. I'm after the sizes so I can change mine to 1/2 & 1/4. Anyone?
seeker
Not sure about that approach ... but the choking is based on constriction so a gunsmith could ream out the existing choke to get what you want .. the actual amount would depend on what your barrels and choke measure now. clayman
Cheaper and better to ream than to cut back. Each 10thou reduction on ID from 0.729" ( cy) is one choke size down. Cutting back would depend on knowing the length of the taper , and whether the taper is set angle or set length - and the rib may need remaking on the end and the bead moving. njc110381
Don't you need to reproof if you make the barrel walls thinner (assuming you may wish to sell the gun at some point)? If you were to cut it back it wouldn't be taking away any structural thickness so wouldn't need to proof?
Vince Green
Baikal barrels are chrome lined so reaming would take out the lining. Yes you should have them reproofed after reaming but a good gunsmith will overlook that because its not really necessary.
poorpeet
The post I read refered to the Baikal having a tapered choke so the shortening it by a given amount gave it a specific choke.
