groach1234
Well my granddad asked me if i wanted to come along with him on one of the shoots that uses our land so i gratefully obliged with the plan to share a gun but when we got there with all the snow one of the other guests could not make it and it was asked if i would take it which of course i did so on the first drive they were beating out a wood with a pond in it they put mallard down on and wild mallard and teal also go onto this pond. so as we were blanking it in loads of teal broke off the pond before we could shoot at them to the anoyance of the guns. I then got to my peg and a few pheasants broke out lowish to my right so left them then a teal came like a bullet and i killed it stone dead in the air and i missed a clipped a pheasant but didn't bring it down and that was pretty much it for me as my remaining pegs were 8, 10 and 2 and there was nothing but pigeons over me for the rest of the day but im still happy as i got my first teal Now am okay leaving it over night as the temp is so low or should i prep it tonight? M ROBSON
Well done George. HD, I would imagine the pond at the end of the drive is being fed barley, as george states it has birds released on it. At the moment I have 150 of the fattest, best fed reared Mallard in Fife on my shoot that I'm not allowed to touch! I would say shooting ducks off a fed pond at the end of a pheasant drive isn't really doing any harm. Mark. groach1234
Perhaps you should keep yourself abreast of the news.................. Voluntary restraint ! As said the pond is well fed daily and on the whole restraint was shown as we did not do the sole duck drives as normally 20 duck are shot this time only 6 but plenty came off the pond in the wood on one of the main drive. Highlander
Voluntary restraint is just that...voluntary AND restraint! It's not a ban (yet) and if we hunters exercise restraint which I guess half a dozen duck off fed ponds is then I don't see a problem with it. Also VR is called for to give hunters the 'local' options. Here in the east for instance we've not had quite the extreme weather some have had and there are many duck on our open waters that are still in good condition (not that we've been shooting them even so). Yesterday the temperature rose above freezing and is forecast to keep rising all week to +6 by which time pretty much all of our extreme weather will be gone! Shame really as I for one was really enjoying it, well apart from having to listen to all the wingers and whiners.

In the OP you will see that "loads of teal broke off the pond" and as such they were disturbed and that is what will make them lose condition. He even says one gun couldn`t make it due to all the snow. When we get so much bad weather we have to think about the birds end of.
happychappy246
well done mate i remember my first teal i don't see no problem with shooting 6 the shoot over from us shot 45 this weekend now thats what you call bad and to make it worse they were the ducks we put down which cleared off :@

If it's found to be in poor condition when it's plucked, then it will be all part of the learning curve.

Little to compare it to but it had a very good layer of fat on the breast this i assume can only be a good sign. George
