A few Pigeon shot at roost

Having read the "show some compassion" thread, I hope i'm not going to get lambasted. Here in the wilds of Norfolk we haven't had it that bad weather wise. It'd been bad enough but no where near the scale of other parts of the country. The birds we shot today were full of ivy berries, maize and corn. They all had a nice build up of that yellow fat and were fit strong birds.

There were lots about and we flighted a few standing in the edge of the cover crop. These birds had the wind up their bums in a force 5 and were 40-50 yards high, challenging shooting.

At three o'clock it was time to move in to the firs. I found a bit on the edge of the woods that was well "used" - traces of feathers and pigeon mess. Al liked the look of a spot higher up where you had a good view of the incomers. We were well spread out, just enough to keep 'em moving. The shooting was very steady, the birds were coming in in singles, pairs and small groups. I had a manic busy spell about half and hour before darkness and Al was the same. He used a Miroku 12 bore with Hull Special Pigeon 6's and I was using my new Rottweil 20 bore with Hull Sterling Game 6's. This was some good shooting with birds coming in under-carriage down looking to land and committed. We picked up 66 birds between us, some in torchlight for a really enjoyable afternoon. Cheers all.

As OTH said, bit of a personal choice. I am not out at the moment cos we have had it really bad down here in the south. However, good days out are important too and well done, good shooting. Personally I love shooting in woodland, roost or flighting. Keeps you on your toes and quite often presents some of the best and testing shots you will ever fire. Good on you.

Vaccum packer?, looks good, heads up, info...?

Cracking write up and just because some including myself have diffrent views on shooting in current weather which in some parts seem to be better than others.

The only thing I would point out is blood and blueing on gun barrels dont mix well.

All the very best OTH

Cheers OTH, you have a make a judgement based on local facts. The birds around here are pretty healthy as mentioned in my initial post. Good tip re blood and blueing, wiped her down though!

I'd agree, hard to beat when the conditions are right. Yes. it's an Orved vaccuum packer. I've had it about three years or more and use it a hell of a lot. Briiliant for keeping food longer in the fridge (e.g. meat 2-3 weeks) and for freezing stuff down. You don't get any freezer burn. Comes highly recommended.
