steve_b_wales
My shower pull switch was faulty today. I disconnected the wires going to it, trying to remember where they went I fixed it, but now the red light on the switch stays on, although there is no power going to the shower unit. The wires connected to the switch were, red & black, red and black, and two earths. The switch has written on it, mains and load. What have I have done wrong? I don't mind the red light on the switch staying on, but my wife doesn't like it, and says that it's dangerous. Any advise will be appreciated. Thanks Steve. pegleg31
you've put the wires into the wrong side. i'm not sure,(i'm a joiner with a little bit of electrical knowledge) but your main should be your feed and the supply is your shower.all you've done wrong is get the wires round the wrong way
hogey
sounds like you have the switch the wrong way round.the red light should be connected to the wires that go to the shower unit so it only lights when shower is on.if you have the load and the incoming power wires the wrong way round and the light is on always you will not know if there is power on the unit until you turn it on.it is very dangerous to mess with electricity and also against the law if you are not qualified.please ask an electrician to check it for you for your families safety.sorry if i sound a bit harsh but consider what I say please. Slug
Make sure you haven't got a supply wrong..sounds like you have Supply (you said Main) FROM ( the consumer unit) Supply L=Red Supply N=Black Load is TO the shower. Load L=Red Load N=Black The CPC or Earth is common but will have it's own corresponding terminal for Load/Supply

Does the unit not have "supply" or in and out on it? anyway the neon should be powered up on the device side
steve_b_wales
Thanks for all the advice. I'll check it out tomorrow morning. In any case, I'll get the wife to take the first shower. Steve.
apache
and also against the law if you are not qualified. Not it's not. Anyone can change accessories like for like even in a special location (bathroom). No-one wants to see illegal activities peddled on the internet, but please confirm your facts before posting. It is just confusing. You have done nothing wrong, other than wiring it the wrong way round. What make is the new pull cord?

It is not my intention to confuse anyone but to answer the question asked .It is better that people who are not electricians do not mess with electrical appliances even though it appears quite simple .It is obvious that all is not simple to the person asking the question otherwise we would not be having this conversation. My advice was for his and his famalies benifit and not intended to cause alarm. There is more to it than just changing like for like and if you are an electrician I am sure you will agree. All the best. activeviii
And as your not a chef then you as not allowed to cook chicken or sea food as you might be poisoned and die. leave the cooking to a professional who have qualifications and charges the earth. IF it was illegal then you wouldn't be able to by the things from the local diy store you would have to show your ticket to get the parts over the counter. your house, do as you like, lets not be told what we can and can do but thats not what the question was. all you have done is put the wires from the consumer unit into the wrong side of the switch. what happens is when you pull the cored you complete the circuit to the wires that go to shower, the little light is wires on to the shower side so lights up once there is power feed to other side of switch. as you have the light on all the time means you have just put mains and load into the wrong side of switch. hope you sort Phil. Fisherman Mike
Just to avoid confusion, You do not have to be an Electrician to change a switch unit like for like but Read the instructions I bet a penny to a pound the Manufacture has printed a disclaimer on the packaging somewhere which states " We recommend this product is installed by a qualified Electrician " or similar wording. This is for two reasons. 1. When you get it wrong (Which you obviously have) and blow the curcuit or worse cause a fire and consequential damage, the manufacturer carries no liability what so ever. 2. In the event of a serious mishap as a result of your negligence causing loss or damage your insurance company will not be liable. Electricity, Shower, Water..... !!!!!! Do your self a favour and get a proffessional to look at it...
