poshpaddy
I have a well maintained Beretta 686 EL O/U (circa 1994ish) and currently it will not fire bottom barrel, then top barrel. All season I've had the selector flipped over to shoot top barrel first then bottom with no problem. However I would like to shoot bottom then top really. Also on the last day I used it I had a misfire on the bottom barrel (i.e. click but no bang) leaving a small firing pin dent on the cartridge but not hard enough to fire the cartridge. I'm going to have to take it to a gunsmiths but was wondering if anyone knew what the problem is / could be and likely cost of fixing it? Thanks. Is the barrel selector moving all the way, heard of some instances with the 686s having problems with it
poshpaddy
Thanks Shuck It definately goes all the way across, but that doesn't mean it's doing the job I suppose. so possible cause 1: broken barrell selector.

kiteman0
when out on clays on saturday, pulled the trigger and click, the cart didnt fire. opened the gun and the pin on the bottom barrel had struck the cartridge, i spoke to a chap who was shooting in the next stand and he said it might be the cartridge that is slightly out of shape causing the pin to dent but not enough power to set the cart off. it only happened once and fired another 100 carts thru the bottom barrel with no problems. foggy11
on a gun of that age , if its had a lot of use, it could most probably be a main spring or as some may call a hammer spring.... It can get a little week over time and cause a misfire every now and then... As said it could just be a duff cartridge or a hard primer...... Try different carts to be sure.... ushoot2
I had the exact same problem. Took gun to gunsmith ,cleaned spring- problem solved. Cost $30.
Dunkield
My first step would be to get the stock off and make sure it is nice and clean in there.
mez75
I had similar problem with a 686 essential, it wasn't transferring to the second barrel after the first barrel had been fired, was told it was more than likely a build up of dirt, took it to a gunsmith for a service & its worked fine ever since. Cosd
Different gun (Medalist) but I had the same problem on my last outing. It did this three times where I fired the bottom barrel but the top barrel misfired, I could only see a scratch on the cartridge each time, not even a little dent. On changing the selector to fire top first, it fired without any problems...... I was going to give it another outing before deciding to take it to a gunsmith, but reading this thread, a decent clean inside may be the way to start! triumphant59
Good clean should do the trick, assuming its a multichoke why do you want to fire the bottom barrel first? Its easier/quicker to reload the top barrel if you have only shot one cartridge.
gsm1968
I had the same problem with a 682. When I removed the stock the knurled nuts on the back of the firing pin spring guides had broken up and jammed the works. Got between the hammers and firing pins, also bits in the workings.
