Frank
It all depends on your budget. If you have got loadsa money, then a Sako or manlicar , is hard to beet. If your budget is tight, a CZ 527 is great value for money. I would recomend a .223 aswell. Then in between their are the Remingtons, rugers, Savages ect, at the medium price range, not forgetting the Tikkas. Shop around and see whats available. Sergeant
If its your first gun then i doubt whether they would lety you loose with a center fire straight away. When you apply put down a .22lr and .17hmr as well as the center fire. you dont have to buy them all, but if you do want / need one then the slots are there and you wont have to fork out 26 quid for a variation. Also, dont forget to put down mods for all of them.
Dunkield
I agree with Sergeant, I wouldn't get toooo excited until you have spoken to your local Firearms Officer, he may have some bad news for, unless you live on a farm or have a good reason to own. It is pointless telling you what would be expected of you where I live as it varies from area to area and FLO to FLO (and you don't say where you are from) All I can say that is you would not be granted a centrefire initially without a very good reason to have one. Find out their number, and give them a call, it could save a lot of heartache.
Frank
This is very true. I never thought about this. Here in Southern Ireland, you can apply for a rifle up to 22-250 for your first application But, you have to have owned a shotgun for a few years. I have heard of felles getting a Swift for instance, for their first rifle appllication, but this is the exception. It is all going to change within the next year, as the firearms laws are going to be ammended, making things a bit more straight farward. Reloading is going to be permited too. The catch is, you will be only allowed to reload up to a 100 rounds of ammo. As it is, we can only have up to a 100 rounds of factory ammo on our firearms certs. :o You can get this changed, to 500, but you have to proove that you will be using this ammount, example, target shooting. Big Dog
it will be my first gun owned Trooper if it is your first gun to own I would say go for a shotgun for a while until you get used to fire power, go to a clay club where you will get a feel for handling a gun safely. If you go for a rifle straight up then try to get into a club for the same reasons, that if you can get a club that will let you join (N. Irish grip with me). .22lr would be my choice. Bolt action too. Will give you lots of repeted fun as you plink of those rounds and cheap. The bolt, looks cool and I feel it is the safer option. Have fun making up your mind
mikky
trooper...join a club,do your probation...shoot everyone else's at the club and you will get a feel what is right for you...recommend .22lr bolt..22 semi auto,.223,.308,all ammo for these can be cheap and cheerful,if you want odd calibres you will probably have to reload your own, which can be expensive initially but cheaper in the long run...when applying for your licences go co terminus

Dunkield
"Trooper is Canadian" (*** don't people fill their location?? ) No we know that, the advice would be different. Go to Walmart and get what you like, it will proably only cost you a couple of hunderd $'s anyway Or better still open one of those bank accounts where you get a free rifle - even better :o

trooper
woops!!!!! i guess i should have told you i was from canada. :*) Walmart in canada, well in BC doesn't sell guns just ammunition. And the states are the ones that give you a gun for signing up for a bank account. You don't have to worry about getting lost in the bush as long as you have a compass, around here you have lots of land marks to help guide your way. we only have one three gun shops were i live.(Prince George) And they won't let you look at them till you can prove you have your PAL( posession accusition liscence) that's why i'm trying to get a little information on guns while i wait a month for my PAL certificate to come in the mail. After that I can by any type of riffle or shotgun i wan't. Now restricted fire arms are a different story. :*)

Frank
Yeah, not too bad of a round, i found it unpredictable from my experience of using the .204 for 6 months. Sometimes it did the job on foxes, sometimes not. I shot 18 foxes with it. B) The accuracy was not the best ither. Whats needed is more ammo selection. I now have a .223, love it.
