Right some advice chaps,

I have been offered a 8 month old ESS dog, he was bought as a pet and not as a gun dog hence he has been left to run wild and do as he pleases, the owner has realised that keeping a ESS was the wrong dog for him, the dog has been breed from good gundog bloodlines. Would I be better off getting a pup and start fresh as I was going to get a pup soon to be a rough shooting dog or would u give him a go :):good::good: ?

Yes!

8 months is not too old to sort out issues with untrained dogs though

I would not expect to be paying out as much as I would for a pup,

because of the extra effort involved.

Guest Callum.

We had a bitch that age

It was wild and my mum was training it but started to calm down after causing months of bother.

Had some sort of heart problem that we weren't aware of and died ....

If you get it good luck anyway:But be wary of the problems it may cause

alot of the old game keepers would let spaniel puts run free for 12 months or so, developing there noses allowing them to hunt wild...then they would rope them in and instill the obedience - sometimes using methods that wouldnt be deemed accetable in this day and age - I guess it really depends on how competant you are at dog training - a pup would be easier to train for the offset - and may I add much more rewarding ultimately.
