pestbry
Get either 10mm or 12mm round and cut to a meter, then i used 25x25mm box section about 5inches drilled hole in center put bar through hole welded bar to box section. With the end i used grinding wheel to sharpen up the end for easier to push into the ground to find the runs. I made mine from stainless steel so no rusting or painting it. i think i have pics somewhere because i made aload to give away on a mole training day a few years ago. You can also use tube for handle too.
dirk
best probe that ive had is to get a old golf club and cut the head off . this will locate the runs and has a comfy handle sorted
Jonty
Heres a link to a company who supply them, their traps a really good too - well made and cheap! Clicky It's worth having a probe where the point is thicker than the shaft, that way you get a noticeable drop when you hit a run. jonno
I use a 1m long, 6mm diameter steel rod from the DIY. (£1.25) I bent the last 3cms over at a right angle at one end which is useful to a)push it in, b)pull it out and c)for clearing the runs a bit when you've made the hole for the trap. Cheap but very effective.
Llanshooter
I made one out of 6mm steel rod bent over to make a handle, worked Ok. My mate then bought one off eBay for a tenner. Its a bit sturdier and has a T piece handle, but it has a brass point that is about three mm wider than the shaft. this means that when you break into a tunnel you really feel the sudden give because the tip is in the tunnel and the shaft doesn't tough the sides of the hole that the probe has made. Mine cost £1.60 but I reckon the proper tool is worth the extra cos its saved loads of time searching for tunnels.
