Tobyb525
Hi all, I know I said I was getting a 22lr but have now sent in for a hmr instead. I'm looking for a real good quality scope for it as I see the extra 20 minutes shooting they could give you more than worth it. I have been looking at a Leupold VX-2 3-9X50 or a Hungarian Schmidt and Bender 6X42. Would 6X be enough for shooting bunnies at 120 yards and which of the two would be brightest? Also, it may sound daft but the parallax is set for 150 yards (on the leupold at least), are they still as clear at 30 yards? Many Thanks :o Tobyb525 P.s. I have done a search but couldn't find exactly what I was looking for :o

I have done a search but couldn't find exactly what I was looking for :o This is all going to get very personal and you are likely to get strong comments all round! There are plenty of scopes which give you this "magical 20 minutes" without spending a fortune, but if you insist on one of the above then get the Leupold. I shoot at 6x on just about everything I have out to 200yards and more, yet one of my buddies has 24x burnt into his ring and only ever brings it down a bit a night, usually to about 20x. Variable 3-9 is useful for a HMR, maybe a 4-16, but like I say, it gets very personal!
Tobyb525
Cheers, Anyone else have any experience with these scopes?
Beardo
i personally would struggle with that lower mag for some of the bunnies i shoot (headshot only up to 170 yards or so).
Rem223
I use a 3-9x50 VX1 on my .22 rimfire and it works fine. Given that you probably wont take many shots beyond 100yds I can't see the need for more magnification. With fixed parallax inside 30yds on 9x the focus is not so good, but that's why you have a variable power. You could alternatively consider one with adjustable parallax if you are concerned. However the adjustable parallax Leupolds will only focus down to 25yds IIRC unless you get an EFR model.
Tobyb525
Thanks, How do you find the VX 1 in the dusk or dark?
Glensman
I have a S&B 6x42 on my WMR. It's a superior scope for lamping foxes, but for bunnies the leupold would have the mag you need as well as a finer reticle. I would be looking for something in the 4-16x50 bracket if I were you. BTW- I could shoot bunnies (and have) in the moonlight with the S & B, but I think I'm gonna trade it against a Zeiss whenever I get a centrefire for fox. WGD
I've got a 6x42 Swarovski on my Sako Quad, it's fine for the .22 and the site picture is clear up to 100, maybe 120. I don't have a .17 barrel as yet but a 6x scope will restrict the range of the .17 if that is all important to you.
al4x
are the leupolds as good at last light? I seemed to get the impression they were no where near as good as S&B etc Personally I wouldn't worry too much about the last 20 minutes with an HMR as that 20 minutes is more critical with deer and foxes, I've got a Nikko sterling 4-16x50 on mine and really like it. Though having tried a mates with an illuminated reticule that was very nice to use under the lamp, for the money they are hard to beat. As NB says don't limit yourself with a fixed power scope as the guns are too much fun in daylight to use at longer distances when the higher mag is really usefull
Glensman
S&B glass is superior to Leupold, but the higher mag and the finer reticle of the Leupold would be more suitable for a HMR I think...
Tobyb525
Thankyou - I think I will settle with a vx-2 3-12X50
mikee
Ive been doing a bit of research into this ready for the arrival of my new hmr and have settled for a Nikon Fieldmaster in 6-18x40, its about as much as i can afford to spend an Nikon Glass is pretty good for the money, the 50Ø lens would probably be better but the mag is only 12x and i quite fancied the finger turn ajustment for a change http://www.riflesports.co.uk/Nikon_Fieldma...x40_Rifle_Scope £359 from Uttings mikee Edited March 24, 2010 by mikee
verminator69
Nikon scope for the money looks good value.
al4x
mikee you really want to try a Nikko Stirling Platinum Nighteater 6-24 x 56 AG IR 30mm half that price and more than enough scope for an HMR they suit them very very well. A few on here have them with the IR they are absolutely spot on for lamping

Beardo
optics warehouse are usually the cheapest for Nikons (good scopes - but i'd try and get a Monarch if you can) As Al4x said, the Nighteater is worth looking through though

Hi I`v had that scope (HAD) soon sold it on, found it had a very milky view it could have been a one off but now over the moon with my Bushnell elites 6-30x50 comparred to other scopes gained 25 min extra at night.
