Topgunners
Saturday I set out early morning to "clock" 4 farms that have just drilled some beans in. I spotted a large flock on thursday moving about betseen the fields and upon arriving in the area found it to be very quiet. I sat upon a hill overlooking the farms and scanned for about 3/4hour with my binos. There was only one field being touched and only by about 30 pigeons. Alan rang me and said there were a few on a field him and his mate were watching and would it be alright to leave him on there. I agreed and he drove over the other side of the county to join me. We then drove to a large manor with a residential farmer who had drilled 300 acres of beans. There were hundreds flighting past a wood and dropping in just lovely. After 1/2 hour watching we set up and the monkeys did not come back (nor the pigeons) in any great numbers and we ended up with 27. Al's mate rang us to say he had had a brilliant day and shot 80. AAAAAAAAGH. (good luck to him. lol. AND in all that rain we had.) Sunday I drove to the fields that Al's mate had shot on the day before as he had said that a large number were dropping in to a field behind where he had set up. I rang a mate to come and join me (as Al was working till dinner time) and upon arrival the birds were dropping onto the same field as yesterday. I very, very rarely will set up on the same field twice running but it definitely was the flight line. We put out 2 hides 20yards apart, 2 sets of decoys and 2 magnets. We shot fairly steady up until pete had to go. I counted 38 and just as pete got to his jeep, Alan arrived. He joined me in my hide and about 2.00clock the LULL hit us, and then about 3.00pm the birds just kept flighting in straight down into the decoys. We shot up till about 5.00pm and counted up 73 more. Weekend total 218. Starting to look good for next week. Got a load of drilled wheat, more beans and PEAS. Bring them on. Sorry no pictures;as the bag was split up amongst the 3 hides. Cranfield
Nice report. Its a good lesson to the new shooters just how long you spend watching the fields, before committing to a plan. Thats how you get such good results. So many just arrive, set up, then wonder where the birds are.
