bruno22rf
Cant believe that so many thought this could be the cam-belt-come on lads-if you can see it then it aint the cambelt is it.Depending on the trim/model of the car this is obviously the auxilary drive belt that drives some or all of the following-Alternator-Power steering pump-Air Con compressor-water pump-all depends on the trim level. You will most likely find that the alternator will have a ternsioner fitted to it-slacken this to fit the new belt and tension as per manual instructions. Mungler
I've got the part, it was the Alternator/Serptentine belt. I'll be having a go at it as I'm pretty practical person, who just happens to know nothing about cars. It seems like a pretty simple job. Alright, thanks for everyones help, I'll let you know how I get on, Bleeh This post goes show how a well intended question asking for help could if you listern to some of less knowledgeable car mechanics you would have been buying a cam belt. It was clear from your description of the belt that it was not the cam belt so for all who think they know it all this is stark warning that ill informed advice could cost another forum member money or worse still if you was given advice about brakes etc or somebodys life. I am not trying to start a war just pointing out giving good advice over the forum without really knowing what your on about is not that good. Kind regards OTH That's the cost of free advice

That is not strictly true is it? Lots of engines used to have the cambelt showing. The twin cam Lotus cortina did for a start My Discovery has an inspection plate and if that was missing you could see the cam belt. We are talking about an old Astra here. Kind regards OTH OK, point taken. Sorry! but from the original post it wasn't clear that it was or wasn't the cam belt, he didnt know! as for cam belts not being visible isn't really viable, because a lot of old motors out there are missing cam belt covers. 2, you didn't have to mention my name, so far as i'm aware i'm the only one who's offered to physically help. The insinuation was pretty obvious chap. atb, gram.
