the difference is the way the bullet is hit by the firing pin.

rimfire......it is hit on the rim to make it fire.

centrefire...the centre of the bullet is where the firing pin hits to make it fire.

the difference is also is the the power of the centrefire is a lot more.

If you want a semi auto, at the moment all you can get one of those in is 22, and you don't have to mention that on your application, you will be authorised to purchase one 22, it is up to you to choose which sort you want, bolt action or semi auto. It is not possible to have a centre fire semi auto

You are doing the right thing in asking questions, but I get the feeling you need to ask a lot more before trying for a FAC! :whistling:

I'm not sure that this is strictly true. I was led to believe that on your application you have to state what type of firearm you are applying for as well as what calibers - i.e. Bolt Action or Semi Automatic, just the same as you have to specify what rifle(s) you want a sound moderator for.

Colster has raised a good point - In order for the members of this forum to help and advise you best you need to give us a little more information. Why not tell us about what sort of shooting you want to do, what your expected quarry will be, how much land permission you have and what type of land it is. With this type of information you will most likely find that the members of Pigeonwatch are a minefield of information and will be more than willing to help!

I didn't put Bolt Action or semi auto on my application, just 2 x .22 rimfires. I then had the choice and bought one of each.

I do not know who led you to believe that Frenchie, but in Yorkshire at least it is not the case, you say you want a 22, then of you trot to the shop and if a semi is what catches your eye, then that is what you buy, no need to stipulate, nor is there a need to put down martini henry, or any other kind of action, just the calibre

I have looked at the application form and realised where I have mis-read it, and you are quite right Fullbore. Question 17 which relates to what firearms you currently have in your posession already asks what Calibre and Action they are whereas Question 19 which relates to what guns you wish to purchase states - Give details of each firearm you wish to purchase, aquire or posess. It then asks for the details of Calibre and Type (Rifle, Muzzle Loading, Pistol, etc.)

This is weher I confused myself between Q17 and Q19 - I was wrong, my appoligies!
