spence
Going to look at a gun from a private seller this evening, I guess some of the basic common sense stuff applies; make sure they say who they are and entitled to sell the gun and the gun itself is in good order. Anything else to keep in mind? Obviously there’s no backup of a dealer but the benefit (hopefully) of a lower price. Last thing, thoughts on a Winchester 101 XTR sporter Ta s. RC45
It's a pity you can't meet at a club, where you can try the gun before you buy.. Phil
BlaserF3
The Winchester will be quite old now and any spares will have to be made for it, a more modern gun such as a Miroku will be a better buy. I don't want to sound like a doom and gloom merchant but be careful. http://www.trulockandharris.com/reviews/wi...r_model_101.htm
spence
Phil, may be a possability. He's within earshot of Broomhills. Blaser, I understand but the Mirokus I've seen (missed out on) have all been half asmuch again. S.
brian28
Winchester 101 will open and close with ease so dont asume its worn out Close gun check still tight xtr had vented rib where barrels join look in for rust Check action face and pins for pitting
al4x
also check the woodwork very carefully, forends can split on them which is difficult and costly to put right
fortune82
I had one of these. Brilliant gun. Take the forend iron off and look at the ejector kickers inside the wood to make sure they are not cracked. If they go it is a £200 plus job as they have to be made from scratch. If its a multi choke check the threads in the barrels arent rusted and the chokes are all in good order.
Gordon R
Check for cracks where the stock meets the action. take the forend off and wave the barrels about. Any play in the jointing will show up. I have owned about half a dozen Winchesters. Excellent guns, but spares are scarce. Blaser F3 is correct about Miroku. Very similar gun, but spares are plentiful. Good buy at a cheap price - £300-400 in good nick - potential bargain. £600 - too dear.
