Cranfield
Is it legal to be in possession of a " .358 magnum with a 20cm metal rod welded to the butt, ditto a Beretta or Webleys", either at home, or at a Shooting Club ? Do Shooting Clubs use these weapons in "practical firearms competitions" ?

Cranfield
I have someone suggesting to me that Clubs get round the handgun ban, by welding 20cm long metal rods to the butts of handguns, so they are beyond the legal length of a handgun. The .358 Magnum, Beretta and Webley, were given as examples. These weapons are used in "Practical Firearm Competitions".
lurcherboy
mmmmmmmm I have heard this too. Pistols can escape the legistation by having long butts. I thought they had to be produced rather than altered after purchase! I will be interested to hear from our members in blue? LB
rarms
needs to have a barrel of at least 12" to be section one and also over all length of 24" so as long as the 20cm bit of metal is in addition to a 12" barrel then yes tis probably legal but it needs to have the long barrel too
Gemini
You cannot simply take a normal handgun and weld a steel bar on to it to make it legal, because it will still be a section 5 firearm regardless. The law states that ANY section 5 gun will ALWAYS be a section 5 gun regardless of what you do to it. Just as a section 5 semi-auto fullbore rifle cannot be converted to fire single shot (thus making it a section 1), so a pistol cannot be converted to include a 12 inch barrel and a wrist brace. They must be MADE like it in the first place otherwise they will ALWAYS be a section 5. G.M.
rarms
>Just as a section 5 semi-auto fullbore rifle cannot be converted to fire single shot (thus making it a section 1) I think this can be done as long as the barrel length is more than 24"
Gemini
No sir it can’t. Any rifle that was once a section 5 cannot be converted to section 1. It doesn’t matter how long the barrel is (are you getting muxed ip with shotguns  ) because all of my rifles have barrels less than 24 inches. G.M. rarms
You are right, it cannot be done to rifles, I was thinking of semi shotguns which were FAC being restricted to 2 shot
rjimmer
It is possible to own and use a 'long-barreled revolver' for target shooting. Not sure about semi-autos because semi-auto rifles are banned in fullbore. Funny how they never banned handguns in Ulster!

Gemini
You must be a member of a club that has a range that will accommodate these guns. And even then you may not get one. A friend of mine lives in Yorkshire and wanted one, but was told no. But! Just up the road, someone who belonged to the same club was allowed to buy one. Doesn’t make sense does it. The other thing that seems to be being placed in front of people as an obstacle, is the fact that some CCs are telling shooters that these pistols may be banned at some time in the future, and that anyone who has one WON’T be compensated. And at @ £700, it takes a bit of nerve to risk loosing something. A blatant attempt to intimidate anyone from applying for one. :< G.M. Devilishdave
Export for sale if they become banned might be an option. Somthing to think about for the future though. My best guess is that pistols will become legalised again in the future. Dave
Gemini
What a pleasant thought, and hopefully one that will come true. G.M.
marlin.45
Hope that one comes true Also food for thought. If you buy an FAC spec air weapon then want to get that reduced to sub 12ft/lb non cert gun you will have none or absolutley minimal chance of acheiving that either.
