Reloading .222

Recommended Posts

:good: I would like to know what I need to reload, a comprehensive list if tools that I need if someone wouldnt mind.

Also, how fiddly is it, I have arthritis in my hands and sold my shotgun reloading gear because I couldnt load the shells into the gun the day after making them as my hands didnt want to know.Obviously I wont be making .222 on the same scale. I have had it for 5-6 weeks and only shot about 25 rounsds and most of those were zeroing. Any good books, or trusted recipies out there?

Thanks in advance.

I don't want to hijack your thread EE but I wonder if I could add a quick question on to yours please.

When someone does give an answer to your questions about what equipment is needed could they also give a guide to what price the equipment might cost to buy.

Cheers mate!

My kit off the top of my head is:

RCBS Press

RCBS Dies

RCBS Powder Thrower

RCBS Trickler

Hornady Scales

Digital Calipers

Comparator Set Hornady

Decapping Die Lyman

Case trimmer Lee

Deburring Tool

Primer Cleaner

Ultrasonic Cleaner

Funnel

Reloading Block

OAL Guage with modified cases

Speer Manual

Ammo Boxes

I managed to get the Partner kit off ebay cheap which was a good starting point

I dont want to add it all up as it would be depressing lol

As aminimum you will need:

Reloading Manual (This is the most important piece of equipment, do not rely on "good recipies from others" do it wrong and IT CAN KILL YOU!!!) see pictures below

Press (single stage is cheapest usually but you can get turrett presses so you don't need to change the dies)

De-capping die, usually part of the Re-sizing die

Priming tool of some description

Seating die

Powder scale/measure

Powder thrower/trickler

Accurate Calipers (digital preferably)

Case trimmer (although you can get away without this if you are only using once fired brass, any more than once and you may need to do more work on the cases!)

This lot will get you started, there is so much to choose from so putting prices next to everything would be pointless. Have a look at www.midwayuk.com not the cheapest but massive choice. Once you have decided what you want and tat it fits with your budget see if you can get it cheaper elsewhere.

or do what I do with my 222 - Buy Prvi ammo at £7 for 20

My CZ 527 loves these rounds and cheap as 17 HMR rounds down Somerset way-

Sportsmans Guns charged me £17 for a box of Federal 17 HMR :good::yes::rolleyes:

Almost as cheap to buy 100 Prvi in 222 (£35) - than 100 17 HMR-(£34) makes no sense at all to me

Thanks guys!!

I am looking into getting privi but no-one around here stocks it and they will only deal with an rfd and min purchase is 300. I can only buy 200. I like the look of the lee set up, I had a lee loadal for my shottie reloading, and it was a good piece of kit.

EE I've had the same dilema and had a demo with GaryB a few weeks back, Initial thoughts are its dead easy once you know what works for your gun, its finding a load and the variables such as overall length and powder weight that is crucial. In my case just playing with the seating depth varied groups from an inch to half an inch with nothing else and that was on a windy day. Once you have everything it is simple but really having a lesson or two from someone who knows is the best route in. I just want to get a load that works and I'll just leave it as it is and use it as I'm not after perfection just something that kills foxes :good:

As for being fidly it isn't really, you have to measure each bullet once assembled but most other actions are pretty simple, specially for Dunkield you can check most of the load parameters online.

I have a similar problem too! I am happy to use Partizans in .222 which I get at about £11 per box (when my RFD has them in stock)! It seems the same for this ammo as it does for 17HMR ammo, that they can charge what they like for Partizans if some can get them for as little as £7.00 per box, which makes them cheaper than I can get 17HMRs for at the moment!
