Colster
Great day yesterday, went over to my shooting buddies place to help him skin and joint the 3 muntjacs we got the previous evening and we were planning to go out after some bunnies after dark. During the afternoon he had a phone call from one of the shepherd's on the nature reserve he works on saying that a fox had taken a couple of lambs so we decided to leave the bunnies alone and go after charlie instead. We sat up on the edge of a heath of about 50 acres and were absolutely surrounded by rabbits charging about all over the place. It's like they knew we weren't going to shoot them. We scanned the area with bins which as I have a slight astigmatism I rarely find them comfortable to use (apart from my mates £1000 Leica's...ho hum) so thought I'd use my rifle scope instead (no ammo in the gun). As the light was failing I noticed how my scope really struggled even at low mag but prior to that while it was a bit lighter how the image degraded when wound up to max mag. Now this also got me thinking about why POI shifts with the magnification and I wondered whether it was down to the scope or slight misalignment of the scope on the mounts as I'd like to actually use the mag for shooting sometimes but if I've zero'd it at 6x I know it will shift at say 15x so I'll only ever shoot it at 6x whereas I gather with an FFP scope this doesn't occur. All this waffle leads me to my dilemma. I also took a quick squint through the scope on my mate's .243 and whilst I can't spend that sort of money...damn those S & B's are good! So decided I'm going to upgrade my scope, happy to stick to second hand, don't want to spend more than £200 (under £150 would be even better) and wondering whether I should try a Falcon Menace (not sure what other FFP scopes are out there) but having said that it's to go on an LR so 100yards is about the max range (mostly at night under a lamp). I generally shoot at 6x but like to have a bit of adjustment for spotting... but need a scope that the image doesn't just disintegrate when it's wound up. Been looking at MTC Mamba's (like low turrets as I do occasionally put a CREE torch on top of the scope), the cheaper Leupolds, Bushnell etc but any other advice? Mr_Logic
MTC I have found poor in low light. falcons are pretty good for the money. You should not need to get a FFP scope to solve the POI shift as decent scopes in second focal plane do not shift POI either, but FFP wil solve it. al4x
what rifle is it on? To be fair for foxing in low light you will show up all the cheap scopes, been there got that t-shirt its frustrating when you can see the fox in the bins but not through the scope. Sorted now with an 8X56 S&B and its clearer than the bins and no worrying about moving POI

groach1234
if you do must of your shooting at 6xmag then you could get a second hand zeiss for that sort of budget, one went on ebay the other day for £160 (in your budget) and then you would have some quality glass to go on your 22. chrispti
Another point to remember with a FFP scope, you will be able to range find (using mil-dot for example) on every mag setting as the reticule stays the same size on every mag. Also any hold over / under reference points will stay the same at any mag The down side is the reticule is difficult to see in low light, as you need to wind the mag down Edited April 29, 2010 by chrispti

George Was it a Diatal? Seen a couple on macleods for the right sort of money but don't know much about them Have you tried zeroing on its highest mag then bringing it down ? Yes, I wasn't sure if it was mounted (as we'd say in Norfolk) "on the huh" or it was just the scope but either way round it changes.
