Just starting out

Hi all

I was looking for some guidance. First a bit of background; after a taster seesion of clay shooting last year I decided to get more involved, applied for my licence in Jauary (which has just come through !) whilst waiting I have had three coaching sessions at West Midlands Shooting ground (Hodnet) as it is is down the raod. As I dont know anyone involved in the sport it was my only way of seeing if I still liked it, had some good tuition. Licence came through and I have brought myself a Beretta 686E sporting. Heres the question... what next ? I would like to get into competitions, but as yet I have no idea of competition etiquet, rules, etc and so far I have only fired the shotgun in the presence of a coach, so I was thinking of going to the open sessions at hodnet to gain a bit more experience, but I'm looking for advise as to what other people have done who have come into the sport with no previous involvement or who have no contacts who are involved in the sport.

I suggest you go back to Hodnet and ask for a lesson with Duncan Lawton, he was at the top of competitive clay shooting and i am sure would give you all the lowdown on getting serious.Join the cpsa which will get you a magazine called Pull every month, which lists all the competitions all over the country, and don,t be shy, ask for someone at your local ground to take you under their wing untill you are confident enough to go it alone.Having said that after about three or four visits to different grounds you will have made enough shooting buddies to be on the circuit yourself with like minded competetive shooters. Most of all, be safe and enjoy. from Auntie. ;)

Good advice by 100milesaway and your lucky to live where you do because you have the choice of shugborough, kingsley moor & doveridge all within easy travelling for you. At this time of year both doveridge & shugborough do a 40/50 competition on a wednesday evening so pop along to one of them and you will soon find some helpful shooters to assist you.

It is also the English Open at Hodnet this week, fri, sat, sun so why dont you just pop along and watch some of the shooters you will soon pick up the in's and out's of the sporting competition rules.

Finally you will find Duncan shooting with his son at Rowley gun club which is close to you and they have visitors on one sunday each month.

Good Luck ;):)

Thanks again for the pointers. Went to Hodnet tonight on their open shoot and shot my first 50 sporting withot a coach standing next to me telling me what to do, it was great !! Although I spent most of my time worrying about what to do and not enough time thinking about the shooting, but I guess thats normal.

Rowley is just down the road from where I live, literally, as I can hear them shoot on a sunday.

Do shooters join clubs, apart from the social element, because its cheaper than going to grounds like hodent on a regular basis ?

My next question is... I wear perscription glasses, to shoot in competitions do yo need to have safety glasses ?

No, I wear a pair of reading glasses, perched on the end of my nose and peer over the top of them :) :o :) :( :o

It satisfies the CPSA rule and doesn't cock up my vision :good:

Elf 'n Safety will be along in a minute to lecture me ???

Well here goes, I have decided to take up Shaun's offer of the North v South competition. Bearing in mind that so far I've only shot once without a coach standing over my shoulder, I have concluded that if I cant bring a top 10 score to the Northern team  then I reckon that I will still be a valued member of the team as the southerners will be doubled up with laughter at my clay busting skills :sneaky2: that it will put them off their game - resulting is a crushing northern win !

I believe I am the 'Northern Numptie Newbie'

Cheques in the post :good:

Well done, you know it makes sense :hmm:

you will get more advice (some good some bad) than you could afford to pay for and in theory meet a great bunch of like minded shooters. :good:

And that now makes the numbers even 35 each side....

Its going to be a fantastic day

early rising... :o

meet at Hodnet...

finish....North...

finish... South... :P

Everyone leaves after making new friends... :bye2:

All to be done again next year.... :yp:
