woodywonka
hello After posting recently on this forum re moderators for a Brno .22lr can anyone give me advice on how much to cut off the barrel when fitting a parker hale silencer does the amount cut off the barrel affect the accuracy I intend to use the rifle for rabbits mostly Thanks Woodywonka
Billy.
Leave it long. Mine has a screw cut after the iron sights. You should get a bit more speed out of the bullet, which will ensure you don't need to holdover your target as much.
Colster
Bullet starts to slow due to barrel friction after 18" and anything above 12.5" is legal. Shorter is easier when you're jumping in and out of a vehicle with it. 16-18" is probably the optimum for accuracy and ease of use but with LR it won't make much difference at the distances you'll typically be shooting (60-80yards) Edited May 20, 2010 by Colster
bennyblanco
I took my Sako down from 22" to 16.5" and its been perfect, it is heavy barrelled so used to be a monster to lug around with an NV scope. Much easier to fire from a vehicle too

garyb
The general rule for 22lr is 16"
njc110381
Mine's 16" and it works a treat. All the powder is gone after 16", usually a lot less. Stay over 12" to keep it legal but there is no reason to have it over 16". Anschutz make them with 14" barrels and they know what they're doing! Accuracy isn't an issue either. There's a common opinion that the shorter a barrel the less flexible it is for a given diameter, meaning it's actually more accurate if it's shorter. With the tiny amount of powder a rimfire burns there is no real advantage to a longer barrel. They are purely cosmetic. Since you are planning on using a moderator then most likely you will be shooting sub sonic ammo. If not then there is not much point having it moderated. As njc states above a shorter barrel all things being equal will be stiffer and therefore generally more accurate.
