spider.20
hay guys i'v heard it said that you should rever go for a chest shot on a rabbit during winter as they put on a layer of fat that acts as a kind of armor against your pellet. well i never go for chest shots anyway but i'd never have belived it if i hadn't seen it with my own eyes a shoot with my mate last week left us with a bag of 1 (his kill) as i missed mine due to bad nighteyes (they aint too grate in the day ether) but he was too much of a girl to gut it himself so i was left with it. on gutting it i found a huge amount of fatty depposits all over the chest/ribs but mostly around the kidneys. it also smelled very slightly different not nasty just different . now thease bunnies are rarely if ever shot so they get the pickings of food but this was one fat bunnie! conclusion? winter bunnies are a bit messyer to gut...an my shooting partner is a girl. a good shot but still a girl! any of you chaps found the same or different? cheers spider
SNAKEBITE
Never go for chest shots. (12lber). If you do get one from a chest shot then IMO it is luck if you down it. Others may differ. As for winter fat well I am putting some on as well!

dave b
I always go for the head.some people just point and shoot at the body.ok they hit the rabbit but they mostly scupper away in pain and eventually die.id rather go for the head and if i miss it then fine there will be another day but if i hit it then its casserole time. Axe
Even with my Rimfire I still prefer to go for a head shot. Keeps the meat clean and offers better sporting. I have never tried a body shot with an air rifle and nor would I try one. I am sure a very educated and well placed shot at the chest would work, but in reality this sort of shot would not present itself and so cant condone it. Head shots only are the most humane with an air rifle. As for extra fat, well not sure about that, I havent seen a difference apart from a change in coat. henry d
Yes this is the time they rely on that fat until the first new bite of grass comes through. The smell IMO could it have been a buck?in which case he could have been ready for the ladies and they tend to smell stronger as they make their territories up.
