Thinking of a swap.

OK Guys, as most of you know I have a CZ452 Varmint in 17HMR which is supremely accurate. I am delighted with the rifle, especially it's accuracy, but my only "reservation" is the weight of the rifle. Most of my permissions are very hilly ground so after carrying my "Hummer" around for a couple of hours I am totally "cream crackered", especially when I have the camcorder mounted on at as well (The camcorder is quite light but it still adds to the weight) I can make the comparison with carrying my Bruno Fox about which is considerably lighter and I don't feel the strain anywhere near so much for the same amount of walking. I put the main difference down to the "Varmint Barrel" on the CZ which "feels" much heavier (After a while of carrying it) than the "Sporter Barrel" on the Bruno. I am only "slightly" built (Maybe not roung the middle) and not the fittest of people (Due to a medical condition which I would rather not discuss) so I am wondering if swapping my 17HMR Varmint for a 17HMR Sillouette(Sp) (Or similar model) would be likely to make much difference. Can anyone please tell me what the weight difference is between the different models on CZ452 is please to help me make a decision?

Any thoughts please?

Chop it in for a cz style or sillouette as you have said , them two have lighter barrels been the american barrel and not the bull barrel like yours and the synthetic stock will be lighter than a lump of wood , both will also be just as accurate so i would go for it .

the CZ catalogue has the wieght of the varmint as 3170g (just under 7 pounds) and the weight of the silhoutte as 2700g (just under 6 pounds). Personally I wouldn't have thought that by the time you have added a scope, mod, bipod, camcorder etc. that it would make a huge amount of difference when carrying it around.

Having said that, I find lighter shotguns much better than heavier ones

That's something that has just occured to me Al4x, I was just about to "edit" and say that my rifle has the 20 inch Varmint barrel. Can anyone say how much difference it would make overall if I had the barrel cut down and rethreaded to a 16 inch barrel please.

When I say "Difference overall" I am refering to a combination of accuracy, power (If applicable) and weight!

i had a cz varmint .22lr with 16" barrel and a .17hmr american with 16" barrel and the .22lr was alot heavier than the hmr was to carry round in the fields , your best bet would be to go to an rfd and have a feel of a couple and see what you think , accuracy and power wise there wont be alot of difference i would imagine.

you just gain from 4" of varmint barrel so will make a difference but not a huge one, a synthetic stock as well should make the difference, accuracy etc you'll be hard pressed to notice a difference.

 I wouldnt cut down a barrel that you are happy with, how much weight will you really save?

I have the silouhette in 21", and with a dm80, and a bipod on its heavier than my .222 and I have the normal barrel, add a lightforce 170 to the top and it weighs quite a bit.

But, I wont shoot without a bipod (I cant!), the dm80 is fantastic and i would never cosider cutting my barrel down!!!! I hate the look of a carbine and even if it was done profesionally Id worry that Id lose accuaracy...stick with what youre happy with!!! Perhaps add a sling? :hmm:
