Turned good in the end...

Now that I've finished all of my GCSE's I've got 3months holiday and I made a list of things I want to do in return for doing some work with my dad. Yesterday evening we were driving past one of our permissions after work to see pigeons pouring into some standing Barley, we pulled into the farm and spoke to the farmer to check it was OK to shoot them the following day. We then pulled up and watched the woodies which were soon put up by a Red Kite and there were about 300.

We woke about 7 and got to the field for 8 much to my brothers disgust who still has 3 weeks of school. After having a watch we saw that there was a steady flightline crossing over the small patch that they'd flattened down the previous day. We set up 10 shell decoys in the patch and on top of the standing crop around the patch. We then set up a rotary on the the very edge of the field. Dad then went to park the truck up and make a phone call. Dad had been gone about a minute when a woodie came whizzing accross the field from in front and set it's wings but it soon flared over the decoys and I pulled off a quite a nice shot as I lost sight of it in the sun. However, it dropped in the barley and I didn't want to go in there and cause more damage than the pigeons.

With this fast start I thought we may be on for a good day but it went dead for an hour. We decided to move under some trees near a muck-heap where we had spotted a good few birds crossing. We set up a bouncer on top of the muck-heap and the shell decoys dotted down one side. Dad went to move the truck and the results were instant. I had a left and a right and then a single as they flicked over the muck heap. Dad came rushing back after hearing the shots and got in the hide with the dogs.

For the next 3 hours we had a steady stream of birds providing some nice driven and crossing shots. We both pulled out some lovely shots up to about 60 yards and the majority of the birds were easy to pick as well. I then had 2 with one shot when they settled in one of the trees. I no it's not sporting but with the birds causing so much damage to the crop it seemed pretty reasonable.

In the end we picked 40 woodies for 68 shots which was pretty good going as they were all challenging shots (apart from the 2 in the tree) and there were also a few we couldn't pick. We both shot 20 bores and RC JK6 cartridges, pretty much every bird was head shot as well meaning our lead was good. I'm really pleased with how I did today, during the last pheasant season I had a bit of a mare as I was stopping my swing and I really got muddled up with my lead, but a bit of tuition from dad and a bit of practice has seen me shooting the best i ever had the past few weeks. We packed up at four as the flight line completely dried up and we were extremely hungry. When we left we spotted the pigeons feeding on the neighbouring farm which we don't shoot so we protected our farmer's crops and had some very good sport to boot.

I hope you enjoy reading this, I'm pretty new to PW and hope to post a lot more in the future. Harvest is only about 2-3weeks away here (depending on the weather) so we should have a few more sessions coming up soon.

Cheers, Cameron.

well done. you must be brilliant shots to head shoot most of the birds flying with a shotgun pattern . sorry bit of sarcasm.

I don't mean it like that. What I was trying to say was that we were obviously really pushing through them on the swing which lead to birds tucking their heads up and spinning in the air when they were shot. There were also pellet holes through the beaks of many birds and very few were wounded. Only 2 had to be dispatched by hand if I remember correct.

usually the case on laid crops they are either dead or missed due to the close range and lack of spread in your pattern

Read the post you Northern Monkey. Cam-S94 was flight shooting. You obviously know nothing about shotgun shooting and pattern placement. Go back to shooting a few pellets through your airgun in your mum's garden.

Well then I am somewhat surprised at your sarcastic response (#2) to a young lad's post with you being such an experienced shot. I believe we should do all to encurage youngsters and not belittle them. But then, maybe you didn't mean it like that. I hope not.
