Redgum
My 700 sps does not lock bolt when safety is on, I fill floor plate then close bolt over the top of the rounds by gently pushing down on top round while closing bolt. When I get to where I expect to shoot I chamber a round and put on safety observing safe muzzle control at all times. Muzzle awarness should be carried out at all times even when gun is empty, its a good habit to have and should be second nature.
Dekers
so you un chamber the gun, detach the magazine to stop another round loading, leave the bolt loose and push the magazine back after every shot, give me a break and obviously most stalkers in the UK are equally dangerous in your eyes as most keep the gun loaded and safety on while stalking in, as Doc says they even teach it on the DSC its that bad. I'd suggest not going out doors or driving anywhere as that is substantially more likely to lead to an accident al4x...I was responding to the original post, nothing to do with any of your comments...and the 700SPS does not have a magazine, only the DM has a detachable magazine! Like it or not, when out hunting, I always have a round chambered and the safety on...but I still don't point it at anything I don't want to shoot! Mine may be a .308 and have range and grunt, but chambering a round can still scare off quarry at 200 yards at times, even taking off the safety has to be done with great care! ATB!! deadeye
the remington 700 sps is a sound, accurate, safe rifle in a moderate price range. i don't understand all this negative talk about the bolt not locking when the safety is on. to me it is a good thing. when you are leaving the field or the range you eject the round from the chamber without disengaging the safety. to me it is safer. if you have cartridges in the magazine simply then drop the floor plate and the rounds drop in your hand in lowlight, sunlight, or no light. in short, there are probably many rifles that are nicer, more deluxe, but for the money you will not find a better workhorse rifle at a good price. it will do it all as well as the worlds most expensive---a ll day and year long and they are a he#@ of a long way from rubbish and the sales figures worldwide prove it. the bolt being operative with the safety on is a plus in my book---you can unload the chamber without fiddling with the safety. i am primarily a wing shot. every shotgun that i own can be unloaded with the safety on and i really like that. imagine me taking by beretta o/u and every time i break it open to unload it i flick off the safety first------how foolish would that be? p.s. the remington 700 action has been widely used by the us marine corps (and army) for sniper rifles since the vietnam war era. they are as highly trained and effective as any group of military snipers in the world and the mainstay rifle for over 30 years has been built around the remington 700 action. it may be a bit dated, but has chalked up an envialble record of performance and success. ATB!! don't think it was aimed at you dekers, as you say no magazine unless you've had the conversion done but personally I quite like the floorplate design and just do as Redgum says when I want to keep nothing in the chamber but want one ready. I had a fox spook whilst releasing the safety last night on a dead still evening, came out the hedge a little too close. Fortunately stopped to look back at 150 yards just long enough. I have to say as a relatively cheap gun mine does shoot very well I'd not hesitate to recomend them

The remington SPS is a remington special purpose stock ( whatever that is ) but the sps comes in floorplate or detachable mag( dm). The safety can be released very quietly if you practice.
