Hi All,

after stating some time that i would never have another series landrover, i've just bought a '68 2a swb.

problem is the rear axle casing is rusted through and needs replacing-the diff etc all work fine its just the case thats shot.

question is...would a series3 lwb salisbury axle be fit for transplant onto my 2a.either straight swap or salvage the axle casing.

any guidance gratefully received

Diff pinion is longer on a Salisbury so you have to shorten the prop, not too hard if you take your time and can weld OK. If memory serves me correctly (I really hate getting old, I used to know these inside out) the road springs are further apart on a LWB which is what the Salisbury will have come off.

Good axle though but it does mean you will pop the front one if you fit the Salisbury, somethings got to give.

salvage the axle with one of the weld on strengthened casings available from various off road suppliers, easier than trying to weld up the rust holes as it goes over the lot and you can weld right round the seam if you want quick job in situ.

If you want do it properly you will have to take diff out and cut off old cover before welding new one on.

The sailburry axle was fitted to 'long' wheel base landrovers so they will need a number of mods to make them fit a SWB.

As said in a previous post you will have to have your propshaft shortened and also the spring mounts will have to moved inboard as they sit further out on a LWB.

Sailsburrys are stronger axles favoured by the more extreme off roaders but the coversion is not a bolt off/ bolt on one and if you get the prop shaft shortening wrong you'll be reminded of it every time you go for a drive.

The easier option in my opinion is to get a replacement axle off a SWB from a scrap yard and stick with the original set up.

This option also saves any problems in diffences in brake setup too as you could get the replacement complete with back plates hubs etc.
