JIMMY12
Evening all Just got a call from the farmer to say they have just started the rape but have only been twice round the field and then stopped, just wondered if it was setting up for the woodies with only a very small strip available with the rest of the rape still standing waiting for the combine Any advice would be brilliant Cheers James

adam1
But if it's a new permission and the farmer has rung you it may well be worth going to give him a bit of confidence in you, im sure you will be able to angle your self and some sort of pattern even if you dont get too many shots its a good publicity excersise. motty
I personally wouldn't bother until more of the field had been cut. You'd probably find that you'd lose most of the birds in the standing crop.

This is true also I have had much better results on completed fields, dont understand why but thats what happens to me doc

larkspur
By all means give it a go, if only to let the farmer know that you are keen, but I agree with motty you will probably lose most of the downed birds in the standing crop. Similar thing with me, farmer started on the barley and only got four passes in before rain stopped play. Farmer contacted me to say the field was alive with woodies. Trouble was there was only a 25 yard gap from the edge to the standing crop and downed birds all in standing crop. If you send dog in to wet standing barley it would get flattened. Informed the farmer who really appreciated the info and has given me a new perm to have a go at
