JRDS
Anyone use one of these round the yard for ratting? What is their effective range on rats, what shot size etc and what is the cost and availability of ammo like? Many thanks in advance. jimblowscash
If you can find a Gun there probably ony good for 20 to 30 feet, the rounds are expensive and youd be better off with a 4.10 I havent seen one for donkeys years, we used to own one and i never shot anything other than a chicken with it, i was nine and the chicken survived! Fenlander
Most 9mm have a barrel length just under 24" , so can't be kept on a shot gun cert, so a lot of these old guns have been handed in, shells can still be got for them easily though,so there must be some still being used, the price for the last lot i bought was £9.00 for 50. They are a nice little gun for ratting, and fairly quiet, and can be used in the garden for the odd shot at a rat without alarming the neighbours, which a 410 would'nt realy be suietable for, unless you had one of the hushpower ones. They can also be used inside sheds and not do damage, which a 410 couldnt. They are a bit of a specialist tool, with many limitations, but if you have the right kind of work for them, you can't beat them. All the best Mick. CHARLY
The 9mm "garden gun" is the best tool for grain store shooting at rats and doves purely because they dont punch hules in your roof or water pipes. But they arn`t easy to shoot with (not a kids first gun) because of the tiny ammounts of shot. the cartridge price is about right , they come in shot size 9 at about 7.5g. I do know of a couple for sale but expect to pay more than a .410 at around 50-100 pounds. PS.I`ve had one in the cabinet for about 8 years and only fired 4/5 shots at rats! mel b3
they are handy little guns but you are very limited in use , i only ever used the one i had on rats (and free range chickens but that's a whole other story) , at anything more than 10yrds they're next to useless but keep it under that and they're a cracking little tool around the cow sheds. Hodmedod.one
The first shotgun I ever owned was a Webley bolt action No.3 Garden Gun. My Father bought it for me when I was about 9. All my mates only had air rifles, so it was great Fired a very small amount of shot, so had to use it more like a rifle than a shotgun. Would do the business on sitting rats at 15-20 yds, but not good for much else. Cartridges are expensive and you would do better with a .410. Fairly useless, but I still wish I had kept it
mossy835
would anyone fire a 9mm in there garden .if you get caught would you not be in the ****
Fenlander
It all depends on how big your garden is,and how close to you other houses are, if you live on a housing estate,it would'nt be a good idea, it would'nt be a problem in mine. its no different to using an air rifle in your garden! as long as the shot dos'nt go over the boundry of your property, and you are'nt a danger and don't cause alarm to others, its not a problem .
