Gun shops in the Huntingdon area

Can anyone tell me if there is a decent gun shop in my area?

I know Huntingdon has the worst shopping of anywhere in the UK, but I need to find somewhere that I can go to that does not involve a 70 mile trip back to my old gun shop in Woodbridge.

Cheers,

Marlin,

That's the one I found on the site Stuart sent out. They should be only about 5-6 miles away from me as the crow flies and, with the aid of technology, I should be able to get to it quite easily at the weekend.

Quite what the lass is going to think when I suggest a drive and we head to a gun shop, I don't know!

Wookie,

It is an unusual place and located right out in the fens. Looks like an isolated 70's bungalow but walk around the back and it's an aladins cave. Bit cramped but anything you can legally own can be found here.

Just promise to take her into St.Ives for tea and buns after. Happy shopping

Tea and buns? In St. Ives? It's full of strange people there though!

Actually, there's a damned good wine place at the end of the high street and I really should go there and stock up if I am in the area...

This is really a fact-finding trip though. I need to work out what I can afford and also what I like in the shotgun market. If I can find something that's in the right price bracket and is a versatile O/U 12 bore that I can use for pretty much everything, then I'll start getting my plans in motion and go for the SG ticket.

With any luck the two local farmers near me will let me on their land at weekends and I'll be set for both a hobby and decent meat from then on!

Wookie,

I work in Huntingdon, and the nearest that I know of is the Gun Shop, Whittlesey. I have only been there once (only because it is out of the way for me), and they had a good selection of guns and seemed pretty helpful. They are out on the eastern side of Peterborough, about a 25 minute drive from huntingdon. Here is their website:

Hope this helps

You must be somewhere near me then wookie - I am in Warboys.

It depends what you are after, if you want clothing or accessories you are best going to Whittlesey gun shop.

I find Fenland better for guns and cartridges - although he has a melee of things that you might need once in a while, snares, knives etc etc.

Whittlsey are better on price for most things and will always do a deal if you are polite enough. Fenland will do a deal on carts if you have enough.

Hope that is of some help.

Waddy,

I'm up the top of Sapley (Not Huntingdon, honest) near the big Tesco, so it's a short trip to either for me round the A141.

My New Year's resolution was to get more shooting in this year and actually get out of the house at weekendds, even if it's only beating or picking up for people. I can't stand being cooped up! With any luck, I'll be able to get some land to shoot on and an AGC and I will be away!

Claybreaker,

That's not good news for me. I was hoping I'd be able to get at least some chance of land, but if it's all owned by the same person, it looks like i'm going to be out of luck. Still, I have a few choices left and if I am lucky, I'll maybe get a couple of acres.

I spose, if nothing else, I can always try and get land back home and just drive back there at weekends.

My family do a bit of work for Lord D Ramsey in the summer months at Abbots Ripton - I'll have to get Grandfather to have a word with the farm manager and see if I can sort something out.

I'll keep you guys informed - 3 guns are better than one ! :sly:

We finally moved back this way in June - With the wedding and everything else I haven't had much chance to get out. I am rough shooting this Saturday and next and then back onto hammering the pigeons when the season's finished.

Myself and stuart usually go up to the wood on the top of Pidley hill for a bit of roost shooting on sunday evenings. You'll have to join us.

Give me a bell when you are about. The wife works on Saturdays so I have them all to myself

Speak to you soon :sly:

Managed to get there yesterday without any problems and was stunned at the number of shotguns, rifles and muskets they had for sale! What a fantastic place to shop!

I asked the bloke what they had that would suit the sort of thing I will be using a shotgun for and he showed me a couple of 12b O/U choked shotguns. Both quite nice, but very different.

The first was a Berretta that felt lovely in my hands, but was too short in the stock. I put it into my shoulder and it just felt wrong. A bit of a shame. The second was a Rizinni and this was a slightly heavier gun. I felt very solid and felt pretty much spo-on when in the shoulder. Now I know I need a 14 1/8th stock!

Anyway, as I was leaving, I got talking to a load of guys that were off out to do some pigeon shooting. They gave me a load more advice and I even got invited out with them when I get things sorted and get a gun. All I can say is that they were top lads!

In short, a very worthwhile trip out to the Fens!
