Evil Elvis
Actually had a sunday off and DangerousDave was talking about doing some automatic ball trap...so we went to Dartford. Im catagorically poo at it!!! we did 2 rounds and i got an 11/25 and 11/25...DD did 13/25 and 13/25 So having been humiliated by DD at ABT we went and did some sceet, there was a couple of lads practising for the comp in the afternoon from warwickshire who came round with us........I of course pretended i was a novice, but after beating them both in both rounds I dont think they believed me I managed a 22 and 24, seriously considered shooting the comp in the afternoon!!! DD was consistent with 15 and 15 We then did the compact and I managed a 22 and DD did an 18, the 22 was the highest score of the day when we left at 2pm. So overall I had a nice day!!!! Gareth0689
I find universal trench much easier than ABT. There's 5 traps and you know the target will pass over a central point where ABT the target can go anywhere! OTR is my main discipline so that could have something to do with it! PhilR
Olympic Trap - a gentleman's discipline, covered shooting stands so no getting wet like hedge monkeys I used to know a Welsh Gareth who used to knock about with Mike W***y and do the GB selection shoots a few years ago would that be you Gareth 0689? Just answered my own question, looked at your profile and you'd need to be nearly twice your age to be the right person. PhilR
Well not quite that fast as I'll explain below. There's been an ongoing argument regarding how to set up the target schemes for OT and UT. The governing body rule books state the height, distance and angle of each target. There's not a problem with dealing with height and angle but at some shooting grounds it can be very difficult to measure the actual distance the target travels on flat ground, as there may be an earth bund in front of the layouts or the land falls away. The targets should also be set in still weather conditions. Wind affects the distance a target will fly, a head wind will shorten the distance and a following wind will increase it. I've compiled data taken with a speed gun capturing the exit speed of clays leaving the trap arm at two shooting grounds, one has Promatic and Farey traps and the other has FAB and Parker traps. The data is taken by setting the traps to fire targets at the heights of 1.5m, 2.0m, 2.5m, 3.0m and 3.5m and distances of 60m, 65m, 70m and 75m for UT at these heights. The distance for all OT target heights is 76m. At the height/ distances up to 65m there isn't much speed differential between the traps at each shooting ground and the exit speeds fall in the range of 50 to 59mph. However at the 70 and 75m distances the speed differential increases between grounds by as much as 7mph for a specific target. The fastest speed recorded was for a 3.5m high, 75m target which was 66mph. The data compiled was taken on still days and is only relevant to those traps and the clays used at the time and the speed gun used. The data from one ground should not be overlaid on another as different manufacture traps and clays will have diffrent throwing speeds. The reason the data was gathered is because it is very difficult to get truly calm days in which to set the target schems plus the topographical problems mentioned above. With the data the ground owner is able to set the target distances using the relevant speed on windy days knowing that the correct distance would be achieved in still conditions. Sorry to have bored you, I'll get my coat.
