Cosd
Been shooting a while now and still haven't managed to get my own permision. I'm lucky enough to be able to go shooting whenever I want as I have access to a friends shoot and I regularly go with a good friend Deny from the forum. Though grateful for what I really would like something closer to home as well so I can go more often even if I just have a couple of hours to spend. A few weeks ago I got a little excited as I spoke to a farmer who said that he had a syndicate of 10 people on his farm and thought there was a place available; This farm is under 2 miles from my house and he charges £150 for the year. I spend that on petrol in 4 - 5 runs to the farms I visit currently so the cost was negligable. Two weeks later the farmer confirmed that in fact there wasn't a place available and I was gutted. Was he just too busy and brushed me off, did he really think there might have been a space when really there wasn't? I don't know..... Last night I popped into another farm a little further and started speaking to a farmers son, he must be about my age and we were chatting for about 20 minutes as he said he new pretty much all the farmers in the vicinity. At the end he explained that it wasn't easy for farmers to allow people to shoot on their land when they know very little about them. He then asked if I could provide any references from any places I shoot and if I could drop them off at the farm Tea house marked to his attention. I am getting a letter from my friend Deny to say we have been shooting together for a while etc etc, I will also take a copy of my BASC insurance but I think I should write a short covering letter as well. Any tips or pointers which might help would be greatly appreciated. Cos Edited September 23, 2010 by Cosd
bothbarrels
If you take your references and insurance round, that's pretty much you can do at this stage, agree to make a follow up visit in a week or so's time, or at least a phone call to see how the land lies, you've got your foot somewhat in the door I think. you never know it may come to fruition. Good Luck!. BB

MM
Come and have a night at mine. A night shooting, a few beers/curry and then some clays with the locals. ;)

The pub is always full of farmers after 2pm, thens the time to chat and get to know a few faces, in general farmers are a private bunch, especially alot of small holders like here, but if your local you should know a few faces and start from there, same as the clays used to be mainly a richmans pursuit, didnt take long to realise that the clay shooting was pennies compared to the work contracts you could get out of them in a relaxed environment. sako751sg
Just be honest.Explain its your first permission and say what experience you have as in years shooting and involving what.Dont push, just explain the situation and hopefully in time it will come.Farmers can be a dour lot,but when you get in with one the neighbours might loosen up a bit and if they know you are doing a good job next door then you might get in.Your insurance and a letter from your mucker plus a letter from yourself is all you can do the now.But heres hoping.
