Compak Sporting

Great fun, and very frustrating at times, as the targets are all killable and generally nothing any distance.

The trick is to pay attention and work out which bird to shoot first in the simmo doubles.

I'll be doing the World Champs again in 2011, this time I think it's at a ground near Rome.

Well, you shoot 25 clays over 5 stations on a trap layout, the birds can be doing pretty much anything, you get a combination of single targets, (full use of gun), report pairs and simmo pairs.

4 layouts of 25 = 100 targets, it's that simple.

Have a look at this for a bit more info on this years World champs:

Great fun - I can't walk too well, so I get some sporting experience I couldn't get without walking further. My local grounds have 3 Compak layouts, combining a total of 5 trap sets that mix 50 metre tower shots and 20 metre loopers that give you a good basic workout for only about 25 metre walking. There is often also a good bit of banter in the stands as well. Have a try.

Bloke, I assume you are talking about Pinewood. How is it these days, last time I went the guy that runs Pinewood couldn't be bothered to put marker boards out to indicate where the five traps were sited? He said people kept shooting at them, something I've not noticed at other grounds that put on Compact or Sportrap.

Sorry, I can't answer that fully, as I have not too much experience of too many other grounds. On the 'pond' layouts, I think the visible traps are marked, but not always so in the wood or the clubhouse layout, where often the clay is appearing out of the trees. I know that every time I have not been for a while, or if there is someone in the squad who is not familiar with the layout, the trappers at Pinewood usually asks if anyone on the shooting line wants to 'see' the clays before the round starts, then talks you through the various clays one at a time if you wish. Personally I quite like not being able to see all the traps for the trees etc, as I have to work at my speed in picking up the line of the clay if I am not 100% sure where it will appear. Hopefully, as the time moves on, I will be able to visit more grounds and see other layouts, but I am dependant on others for transport.

I've shot Compak, (or Sportrap as it's generally called here), at grounds all over the UK and abroard, and I've never noticed anybody intentionally shooting the marker boards.

OK, some may receive the odd flyer pellet when they're positioned in the path of a dropping target, but as for people deliberately peppering them, I've never seen it.

The trick is to either use metal marker boards or to position larger ones well away from the gun position.

It's important that all the traps are clearly marked, as not to do so contravenes the rules of the game, also people will end up calling for the "wrong" target, which can be unsafe when they see it too late and snap at it, not only that, it causes delays and arguments and disrupts the flow of the squad.

Some people find it difficult enough to work out which bird is which even when they're clearly marked..!!
