A question really for the moderating team, i.e Teal, Cranfield and Henry d.

Early in the new year i have encouraged members to post the numbers of Pigeons thay have shot and year to date the total is 515.

This is a terrific website with a lot of first class debate and views.I am at heart a pigeon shooter and would like to see more promience to this aspect on the PigeonWatch site. My questions to you are:

1). Is it worthwhile continuing my "count"?

2). Is it posted in the right place or is it better to move it?

3). What more could be done to get a better representation and more members posting their scores?

4). Is there any other relevant information members could post.

PS if anyone has an opinion other than the moderating team please post.

Cheers :D

I guess my thoughts are-

1) Why record this? What will the figures be used for?

2) Are you also recording the number of people who respond?

3) Are you recording the location of the bags?

4) Are you recording the weather conditions, time of day, etc, etc

5) What analysis will be done on the figures?

Unless much of the above (and more) is noted, all you'll be able to say at the end of the year is "some of us shot 6000 pigeons between us".

Mirrors my thoughts as well Piebob.

Specifically.

1) No idea if there is any census. Totals could be useful to the BASC for example?

2) Could be captured from the posts.

3) 2) above.

4) 2) above.

5) I hadn't planned to do any although it might be quite intersting.

I think a proper structured return might add a whole lot more. As you say "some of us shot 6000 pigeons between us" doesn't tell us a lot.

I thought there might be a way this site could capture relevant info easier and on an ongoing basis hence my post to

"Suggestions and Addittions to the site"

Thanks for your comments.

My thoughts:

I wouldn't have any objection to an attempt to get a census, I also think where possible it would be interesting to get a breakdown of squabs and adult birds to see how this ratio fluctuates over the year.

I think in order to get an accurate and honest assessment, it needs to not be posted on a public forum- so far the replies all look fine, but if its not on a public forum then there really is no purpose in embelishing the numbers.

mmmm IMO unless it's conducted in a totally scientific manner then it's of no real use AND discussing bag numbers (or any other questionable issues) on a public forum...adds weight to any anti arguement. Might be that DEFRA could also take an active interest and allow the EU directive for a closed season :D

Its interesting yes, but the thing is, you only know about the ones that people tell you about.....so how can you even begin to guess how many are being shot that you don't find out about.

I know this is rather unhelpful, but its just a thought.
