MM
Who posted on here a couple of months ago about scared of flying? cant remember who it was. Anyway, have a look in todays METRO newspaper on page 20. There is a very good article that answers some/most of the questions about safe flying. It certainly helps reading that pilots think the most dangerous part of flying is the drive home afterwards.
Bigweed
Certainly true - when i fly, the wife drives home

I cack my pants as well, but the more i found out about how safe it is, the easier it became. Trust me mate, i know how it feels.

Guest CraigBenson
Just to give you the cosey warm feeling, most comercial aircraft now prety mugh fly themselvs and land under the control of the auto pilot, and can drive to the gate as long as the airport is set up for it. The pilots monitor the radios, adjust some settings for the auto pilot, and play scrabble.

Guest CraigBenson
I can do a theory of flight lesson if that would help. I love flying, and being on the flight deck is the best seat in the house. I've seen some wonderful sights from the front end of a TriStar over the years. MM
Problem with this is, I'm in IT and know how computers can go wrong Ah, but most modern aircraft have 5 computers and each one can fly the plane. If they all broke, there are still a couple of pilots to do the work. Imagine how unlucky you would be if all 5 computers broke, and both pilots dropped dead
Guest CraigBenson
Problem with this is, I'm in IT and know how computers can go wrong There are at least 2 doing the same thing and looking at each other all the time. Any faults it will flag them up and may revert to a basic function if it's a biger fault. At worst the pilots have to fly manualy. or with the stewardess I have had to do a loose atricle search on an aircraft while it was being refuled at Assention Island. The Co pilot had dropped an E (the scrabble letter).
Grandalf
Over 42 years which comprised over 20,000 hrs of piloting I can honestly say I never played scrabble once! Seriously though, most of the noises that you hear in the back of a plane are good noises - flaps extending and retracting, undercarriage going up and down, etc. Movement of the aircraft is good too - it means the thing is being controlled. Turbulence will not kill you unless your bottle of duty free comes out of the overhead locker and cracks you one on the skull - the 'plane wont fall apart. Lightning is frightening but not terminal. The worst thing you can ever hear in any aircraft is absolute silence...Unless you are meant to be in a glider. Me though...I'm terrified of dentists and I have my six-monthly check tomorrow morning... Now that is scary.

kyska
I watch pilots landing and doing stuff on you tube, can someone tell me what the loud fast clicking sound is in the cockpit? heard on approach it seems, and before taking off. Gordon R
I have flown and will fly again, but I have no liking for it. I love the accelaration on the runway and cruising along. I don't like the descent. Flying doesn't scare me - coming down prematurely does.
Grandalf
That loud clicking noise is a small electronic gizmo that tots up the total of the pilots expenses.
