fortune82
Listen to the keeper or who ever is running the beating line. Keep an eye to your left and right and keep in line. Follow others lead basically. If it is a "noisy" beating line then join in. If it is a "tap tap" beating line then keep quiet. Thats basically it! Wear warm clothing but remeber you will probably get hot after a few drives!
Blackpowder
Beating is really a simple exercise and as a newcomer pay attention to what the gamekeeper is saying. Sometimes you may be required to stand still and clap or chap, others you may be asked to push on ahead the head man will have it all worked out for the weather conditions on the day. A straight line is a must to drive game forward a steady advance through cover, one man falling behind will make a weakspot for birds to run back, someone racing on to far ahead can cause a premature flush. Two essentials waterproof clothing from head to toe and a stout beating stick, something strong enough to take your weight while crossing a wobbly fence and hefty enough to cleave a gap through briar and baramble. Enjoy the experience and look forward to the rewards of the helpers day at season's end. Blackpowder
