Shooting with a canon today!

It looked like being the best day of the week so far weather wise and as I am getting a bit low on ammo for the "Hummer" I decided to go for a walk with the Canon today. (The Canon EOS 400D that is!)

I just had a walk about in the (Council owned) woods which are just behind our flats to see what was about and came back with these photos!

Aw, a Robin.

I took this 'shot' at a stag and some hinds last weekend with my Canon 40D. I didn't post it earlier for fear of being labelled a gay for NOT shooting it with a gun. I also took this photo with my smaller Canon Ixus in an underwater case, never posted this before either. Anyway, I like Canon cameras and would recommend them to anyone.

It's often a case of it being just as pleasurable to shoot things with a camera as it is to shoot them with a rifle, plus of course good wildlife photography often requires a reasonable degree of fieldcraft skills! They are two very good photos Hanks mate!

Nice pics, but in fear of offending (which I don't want to do), have they been vastly cropped and zoomed?

No offence taken mate! I actually welcome comments such as yours Billy as it gives me pointers on how I can improve on my photographic techniques. I used a 70-300 zoom lens with the camera set to take photos at 3888X2592 in size (The highest possible setting without going to "RAW". From that I can work and crop in fairly tightly if need be without losing too much from the photo. With regards to the quality of the photos I have taken them down to fairly low in order to keep the file sixe down for uploading purposes. I am sure that you will agree that there are limits to how close anyone can get to wildlife to photograph it no mayyer how good your fieldcraft skills are, especially if the subject is 30 feet or so up in a tree!

The compression answers my question. I was scratching my head over the image quality loss and my only guess was that it was down to cropping.

What speed is your internet? If you're uploading each image to PW and then 'attaching' the compressed image, you're doing it wrong ;)

Do you have an account on Flickr? As mentioned in your other topic, I have got all my favorites on there and it's a great way to get ideas and get your photo skills out in the public eye.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/willandjasper/ <-- is my Photostream

Flickr will take you to the main site.

:good: keep it up

With regards to the shark photo, it's not zoomed in. I have a theory that these sharks are attracted by the electronic signal of a flash camera. I think their sensory receptors are 'sparked' up by the pulse and it's possible to bring them in closer by charging the flash. I suppose it's a bit like a deer call.

There's nothing like being in the water with these creatures, it's the ultimate rush.

Further to what I was saying, check out http://www.flickriver.com/ it's pretty cool :)

Cheers for that Billy - Are those that you mentioned similar to Photobucket - I have an account with Photobucket already but if either of those that you mentioned are better I can sign up with them.

I use tinypic.com

Best to register otherwise you have to put the 'capcha' code in, to verify you're a human, not a bot trying to spam.

Flickr isn't like any of them. It's a place where photographers show off their work and a lot of imaging companies pick up their new recruits. I know Getty Images have a group where you submit photos and they recruit from that pool.
