mick miller
I keep an eye on them too.. although I'm not sure about the white land rover on a galvanised chassis :yp: Edited November 23, 2010 by mick miller
HDAV
Anything with a Galv Chassis has probably had a replacement chassis and for a 300TDi chassis to have been repalced its either been crashed or similar (Flooded?) Older ones with galv Chassis are possible rotten jobs but 10 year old with galv chassis probably murky past (as far as i am aware Galv chassis wasn't a factory option) Apperently a Mk2 Polo heater is an easy upgrade/fit to the standard unit. At least with a defender you will be able to get the missus and trailer off a wet field when they get stuck!
bakerboy
I'm having problems finding a landy to replace my recently sold car. I'm after a particular type of Land Rover, I've scoured AutoTrader and Google'd every type of search I can without success and so I'm appealing to the greater PW community to help me out if possible. What I'm after is a: Defender, 90, 300 TDI (1994-1998), County spec or panel side (not bothered), not a bazzed up example with winches etc. but a nice original, cared for landy (and not a *** bought and tarted up to look like a new one with a £12k price tag). My budget is sub £7k, I can travel a reasonable distance, ideally the chassis won't be rotten as a 4 week old peach but I don't mind of the rear x-member has been replaced. Some service history would be nice. Now, have any of you seen a lonely landy sitting on a forecourt someplace? Do any of you know of land rover dealers that I could try (there ain't much round these parts)? Have any of you got one lurking in a garage that you could realise into a cash sum? My thanks in advance, Mick. Bennington Landrover Herts, just outside Stevenage have a 94 plate £6995, 7 seater looks quite nice,I can meet up with you and take you there if it helps. I will forward telephone number shortly, I do not have it to hand at the moment Cheers Terry
Birdy
Couple of things. I've owned and driven LR's for 20 years so have dealt with most companies in the trade and driven/owned most models. Rogers Of Bedford, and specifically the Rogers that runs/owns it, is a cowboy. Bought from him and had no end of trouble with him, his avoidance and empty promises and his downright deception. Secondly, forget this myth about 'electrickery' and TD5's. True, if you were in Mali and by some freak your ECU got corrupted you'd curse having electronic controls. In reality, and in my 250,000 miles of driving the TD5 engine (plus 100's of 1000's driven by friends and family), the need to get 'expensive diagnostic' intervention has NEVER occurred. For servicing it's all the usual suspects that need changing. There are no dashlights that need 'turning off' via hook-up and any reputable LR specialist workshop will diagnose any problems by driving, looking and listening. In short, don't discount the TD5 option purely on the victorian opinion of a few. It might be fly-by-wire but the space shuttle it is not!! All the best and good luck getting the right vehicle. mick miller
Ah, that's interesting Birdy. I have no experience of TD5's, in fact my leaning toward the TD5 is led purely by a pal who has driven and owned land rovers for years. My experience ended with the series land rovers and those old buses could handle just about anything I threw at them. Opening it up to TD5's would make life a lot easier, but then I'm worried that a 7k TD5 will be a dog? Anything to be wary of (other than the usual chassis, bulkhead, transmission etc.)? Birdy
As you've already identified, there are all the usual things to look at in a TD5 as there are in a 200/300tdi. Your other concern about a 7k pig in a TD5 has some merit but don't forget you can get a 10 year old+ TD5 so some should be well inside your price range. Although I poo-poo'd the ECU aspect of them, be aware that pre-2002 TD5s don't have 'flash programamble' ECUs. That only really matters if you wanted to 'download' a performance improvement by changing the injection/mix/airflow/pressure settings. I figure you want just an unmolested and reliable workhorse though so pre- or post 2002 shouldn't matter. The TD5 driveability improvements over the tdi may have encouraged a previous owner to drive it like a car and roar around the place. Nothing per se wrong with that but consumables like brakes might need attention. The older the vehicle the more likely the brake calipers are to have siezed too. LR want £350 for calipers. Online you can source OE Lockhead ones for £95 delivered. Oil ingress along the wiring and into the ECU engine-side can be a problem but the fix, again, is affordable at c£40. Even on 300tdi's you need to verify the drive belt dowel problem has been attended to. Abrasion from lack of clearance caused drive belts to fail with catastrophic consequences. It was a well publicised fault and I reckon most have been done. Always get proof though. If in doubt, Google your concern and/or post on here. Don't be in a rush. Despite the apparent shortage in your price range right now, the right one is out there and it will surface. Ade

That's the trouble with the bay (and auto trader), people don't pull the ads when sold as it bolsters their vehicle portfolio. You end up doing a lot of ringing round only to find they're dead ends. AlistairB
Rogers Of Bedford, and specifically the Rogers that runs/owns it, is a cowboy. Bought from him and had no end of trouble with him, his avoidance and empty promises and his downright deception. I'm surprised to hear that about Rogers. I bought my Disco from them, got a good deal and nothing has gone wrong with it. I dealt with the son (i think) and he was fine. My mates and i all get discount for anything we want to buy from them, and round here, not heard a bad word said about the place. AB

mick miller
Would folk consider one that has rotted around the top of the bulkhead and been repaired (otherwise sound), it looks and feels like the repair may have been mad with fibreglass and filler as it doesn't feel smooth. AJD landrover have one on the forecourt, it's otherwise sound (and it's a panel sided van rather than a county which I prefer). I'm a bit wary of a botched repair though. EDIT: Actually, I think I know the answer to that one... Edited November 24, 2010 by mick miller
