CharlieT
Get the .223 first. You can shoot everything with the .223 but you can't the otherway round. Yes I know the .223 ammo is more expensive but if every shot is a kill it will be worth it for the fun factor and will cost no more than some people spend down the pub on a Saturday night. njc110381
don't listen to him, if you have enough crows and rabbits the HMR urinates all over the LR and doesn't ricochet all over the place. You get twice the range, twice the power and you really can't use a .223 like a rimfire or the big factor missing from the maths is barrel life if you want to put thousands of rounds through it it ruins financial calculation. On the other hand look at his avatar... How could you possibly take him seriously?

Vermincinerator
out of .22LR or 17HMR, Go for the 17HMR its infinately superior to the 22LR, you will wish you had one when that nice fat rabbit is at the limit of a .22 subs range, i have forgotten how many my mate has said i "wish i had brought my HMR" Having said that my first choice would be the 223, it will cover everything including small deer. Dougy
If we were having a conversation in the local over a pint and you asked me the same question, i would first ask about you experience with fire arms, and hopefully you would understand the reason behind the question. Not knowing your previous experience, i can only assume that you have shot an Air rifle and possibly a shot gun before and have recently decided to venture into the RF/CF area. I maybe wrong. Maybe you have experience, we dont know do we ? As you are aware there is a masive difference between Air rifle pellets and a bullet from a 223 This brings me to my answer, I would first of all go RF whether its 22 or 17, if you have a problem with neigbours or livestock then i would suggest 22LR with a Mod and use subs, if there is not a problem with livestock then 17HMR. After you are use to thinking about what lies behind your targets, by checking back stops then venture into CF. By going for a RF be it 22LR or 17HMR you will have many more days or nights out that you will bring something home, you will shoot more with your RF than you will with a CF. Oh by the way its your round I know there will be loads have other opinions, but i can only speak from experience, and thats a little more that some can do
