Billy.
Had a request to turn three fox brushes in my car into a scarf. They've been in the car for a while now and aren't at any risk of rotting. Problem is the smell and texture of the fur. Clearly fox isn't the 'eau de toilette' any girl would like to have wafting off them as they stroll down the high street Secondly the fur isn't that soft. I've got a rabbit fur hat and the fur has been treated somehow, so it's unbelievably soft to the touch. Nothing like what freshly shot rabbit fur feels like. Can anyone help me on this too?! I was planning on soaking the brushed in meths, but apparently this doesn't shift the smell. Would bicarbonate of soda do any better? My plan for the three brushes is to cut one to make a middle, pack the innards with some sort of stuffing (feathers, sofa filling??!) and sewing the lot together. So, am I nuts and will this work? Stealth Stalker
What I do mate is bone them off charlie, fill them with salt then air them in the shed for 2 or 3 months, then shake all the salt out, fill the sink with warm water & fabric conditioner & give them a good wash, leave them to dry & they're soft , fresh smelling brushes SS

Left in the Landy, which has tainted the car with a nice scent Unless you say otherwise, I'll stick them in meths first, to hurry the salting effect up and then give them a loving wash with conditioner

steve_b_wales
I soak the tails in a tanning solution for 48 hours. They are then washed in warm water, a few times, then dried out naturally. The smell soon disappears. The chemicals can be bought for around £18 from Snowdonia Taxidermy Supplies. The chemical powder is mixed with warm water to make 2 gallons. You only need about 2 pints of tanning fluid per tail, and you can use the solution at least 4 times before using a fresh mix. So you can tan many tails before the solution needs renewing.
