HDAV
Seen a few people asking about and commenting on clay traps, how much space do you need to use on at home? By home i dont mean a normal house, if you had a large garden? small field? or is more needed? also with planning i know there is a 28 day rule (does this apply to "you on your own land") anything else to know? I think i read some where about 300 yards for fall out? seems a bit much as quite few clay grounds i have been too dont have that much space beyond the pegs. Assuming the land is flat what's the best way to test? Just measure it out? Looking at it needing 300 yards 300 yard sided square (stand on one edge with trap in front and shoot going away or crossing birds allowing for maximum 90degress of swing! is 18.5 acres!!!! I know of 10 stand sporting shoots on less acreage..... Edited December 13, 2010 by HDAV
kyska
Funnily enough I was reading an old sporting shooter yesterday about this very topic. They stated a fallout area of 350 yards is needed, but I agree, that seems a lot. I don't think you need planning if its not a financial investment IE you're not charging the public to shoot on it...but that may well be very wrong. seeker
Your safety area is just that ... I believe its 300 metres but check on CTSA site ... . A following wind, some oversized pellets etc .. the zone caters for the exception looking for an accident. hillmouse
300 yards is the recommended exclusion zone for shot based on a maximum load of 28grms No.6 It would be wise to make sure no shot falls on neighbours land, especially property. Public footpaths, bridleways and public highways should be a minimum of 300 yards from the firing point. You will need Planning Consent if you exceed 28 days shooting in any one year. I believe this is more to do with Noise Control. Lots of useful info in the CPSA Safety Officers Manual covering how to safely use multiple traps within a common exclusion zone etc.
HDAV
IT would be one trap manual probably there is a huge field next to the garden, might have to try and find the land owner and see if he minds shot falling on it, arable land that has pigeon shooters on it from time to time... who had shot falling on the ground i want to use a clay trap on as you could hear it landing on the greenhouse. The field is huge but is 742' wide! so only just big enough for the fall out! Edited December 13, 2010 by HDAV

hillmouse
Shoot in to the wind with skeet 9's and you'll be alright.

The field is huge but is 742' wide! so only just big enough for the fall out! As has been said already you need 275 metres or 300 yards for the fall out zone, if the shot goes beyond that then you need permission, if you don't have permission I believe it would fall undeer armed trespass as (potentially) the shot passes your boundary. If you have 275 metres at any point you could set your trap and restrict the arc of swing to contain the fallout of shot or cross your fingers for a strong headwind and shoot steel 9's The above is based on normal clay loads assuming a max of 28g of 6's, subsonics may be less HOWEVER you would need to consult BASC, CPSA, NGO etc to gain further information on the subsonic fall out ranges. HDAV
realistically with a main A road nearby the only option other than standing next to the road (again in breach) is to get permission over the adjoining field (at this rate the adjoining county!) I think i might just give up and find a ground open over Xmas.....
