chris64
I've had a problem with an illfiting choke which coursed a bulge in the barrel importer would not replace it, allthough i bought a new barrel and the gun shop had to sort out chokes that would fit, they did find five to fit it out of 30,it happened last march gun shop seid i could have the barrel shortened anyway i phoned my local gunshop today witch ive done every two weeks over the last 9 months to see if my barrel has come back from havin its barrel shortend the responce was the first gunsmith sent it back saying it's illegal to shorten a shotgun,so they phoned another two one seid yes but it needs to be reprooft, next seid yes doesnt need tobe reprooft so the gun shop phoned proof house they seid it does need to be reprooft, but the gun shop wont send it to be done untill they now for certon that it is legal or not to shorten a shotgun,as they dont wont tobe on the wronge side or put me on the wronge side of the law or am i being messed about to put it politely. :(
Daveo26
They can be shortened legally if there is a good reason for doing so, like a bulge at the muzzle. as long as the barrel is over 24" and the gun is still above the legal overall length is beleive is 48" but i could be wrong about the o/a lenght That is wat i was told by a gunsmith. Have you phoned the proof house? sounds like your being fobbed off. Are you in BASC? id ask there legal team.
Dekers
You can take a hacksaw to the barrel legally yourself, as long as it stays above the legal minimum length. The Proof house is talking ********, they just want your money!

Frenchieboy
I'm not sure about the legalities as I was always of the impression that the barrel was OK as long as it was not below 24 inches in length, but if you shortened the barel on a shotgun by say 3 or 4 inches wouldn't that seriously effect the choke and shot pattern? It would remove any choke and leave you with true cylinder. Unless you go below 18" (illegal anyway) the muzzle velocities wont be affected particularly as modern powers burn very fast except big wildfowling stuff. Having short barrels it is very fast and superb for instinctive snap shooting i would never sell it. Geordie
