Billy.
ok so the section that i pasted above from the basc site is a guideline not the law then? I may well be wrong. Its just i stumbled accross that section under airguns when i was looking to see what my friend could legally shoot. My understanding is that you couldnt from what it was saying. It's BASC guidelines, which are just indicators. Personally, I'm not a fan of airguns and pheasants, like I'm not a fan of hares and airguns. Dunno why, just am

I wish there was a simple book with the law in it. I think to many people get stung by the law by it being to confusing at times. I agree with your thinking so your not alone
The Duncan
ok so the section that i pasted above from the basc site is a guideline not the law then? I may well be wrong. Its just i stumbled accross that section under airguns when i was looking to see what my friend could legally shoot. My understanding is that you couldnt from what it was saying. For all I agree with most of what BASC advises, you have to remember (as has been mentioned) BASC don't set the laws, they provide guidelines and their recommendations are also subjective and opinionated. I can hit a Woodies cranium with my pcp air rifle out to a good range, and as the pheasants cranium, isn't any smaller, I can hit that out to a good range and switch it off efficiently too. So why wouldn't I use an air rifle? Duncan
paulos
It's BASC guidelines, which are just indicators. Personally, I'm not a fan of airguns and pheasants, like I'm not a fan of hares and airguns. Dunno why, just am Airguns are fine for both, but unfortunately some people push their luck and limitations and attempt chest shots or shots at excessive range and it all goes Pete-Tong. So long as people show a little common sense, airguns are fine for Hares or Pheasants. (Personally, I don't shoot Hares anyway. I don't especially like eating them and they aren't doing me any harm so I leave them alone).

On my patch they aren't in surplus so I like to see them on the land, hopefully increasing their numbers. Pheasants - rarely with any gun. If I had them regularly wandering across my land or permissions in season why not. IMHO airguns are a 'headshot only' tool. Yes its possible to chest shoot certain quarry. I'm still happiest with a brain switch-off which I find has the least number of variables (rib cage etc) that can prevent a clean kill. NOPE! still just a gamebird I'm afraid Happy new year and hope you get to shoot the first unicorn of the season. I think I have a good chance...Condition 5 on mine reads:- 5. The .22AIR RIFLE, .22WMR, 17HMR, .22RF RIFLE SOUND MODERATORS and ammunition shall be used for SHOOTING VERMIN, GROUND GAME AND ANY OTHER LAWFUL QUARRY, and zeroing on ranges and land the holder has lawful authority to shoot! I think that covers most bases, including Game Birds and Unicorn, and if there is any doubt I'll just use one of my centrefires on the Unicorn as they are all similarly conditioned!
