What a day!

I had a very kind invite to a friend's syndicate shoot on Sat. It was a fair way to travel but worth every minute.

A real mixed day was in store and after getting out of bed at 2.15am :o we made the 3 hour drive to the shoot to get there for first light and a few hours Wild Fowling... a first for me, and boy was I excited! The weather was good for shooting ducks but not for us - horizontal rain and a near gale, but I didnt care, and was practically shaking as we sat in the hide watching the decoys sillouettes and watching the sky for the first few.... sadly all we managed to decoy was a load of shellduck and some coots - a brace of teal zoomed past at some point, but far to fast to even raise the gun! Anyway I LOVED it, and the boys further up the creek had a good hour with a few teal, widgeon and a nice fat canada.

At 9.30 we started the shoot which was a nice friendly relaxed, walked up / stood day. I was informed we might see a few Woodcock which I was pretty excited about as Ive never even seem one - 5 mins in and one is flushed by my mates springer - Awesome! That made my day... until a few mins later another flushed and I bought it down with the 2nd barrell!! I was over the moon - my first Woodcock! I also had another first on this drive which was my first Partridge. I was loving this! The rest of the day continued in a similar form - not masses of shooting but a great craic, and just great to be out.

At the end of the day the bag was a modest 19 Parts (inc a few english) a handful of Phes, 3 woodcock and a bunny, plus the duck and geese from earlier.

Although we had a long slog back home we were offered an hours roost shooting by the keeper as I hadnt had many shots and was the guest for the day - what a great offer, and boy was I glad I accepted!

3 of us shot from 3pm to 4pm, just and hour for just over 50 woodies! AMAZING shooting - we were in a small copse, I was deep in the middle with a clear flight passage out in front and tress to the right and left - I had birds in a constant stream for over an hour - great sporting shots, I was able to shhot them like tall driven birds. When stopped to allow them to get in to roost the copse filled within a 10 mins with litterly hundreds of birds... it was hard to stop shooting!

A day I'll remember for ever!
