activeviii
Had a call yesterday from a good friend asking me if i would like a days shooting. I'm not really up to it at the moment but still made the effort. dropped the kids off at school and then popped over to the field of rape that was to be shot. Norman was already there with his hide setup and was just loading 18 fuds out. so me being in for a social i set a hide next to him so we could have a chat and a mickey taking session. i put out the magnet to the left of pattern, and angel in the middle and bouncer to the right. wind was left to right at 8mph with and overcast sky. i shoot from a fishing chair and Norman from a fishing seat box, we are both old cronkey farts with no good bits between us. both ready with first carts of the day shoved up the spouts when a bird dropped in from behind and straight into pattern, first one down with another on its way from up the field, that one down and another in from behind. in the fist 50 minutes we had 50 birds on the clicker for 50 cartridges. first time i have shot this well and Norman couldn't believe the way these birds just kept coming and trying to land like it was summer stubble. all the birds were decoyed into 20yards and we only shot one bird at a time with no looking for the left right. then Norman had to mess it up and go for a double, which i might add he didn't do, 3 birds dropping in so shot first bird and then swung though for second bird but oh no Norman didn't hit the one bird, the jammy *** had them both, 3 birds two carts with 28g of 7.5 20g. nice one Norman. after the 50 birds we had a tidy up as the birds just stopped of jinxed away but the tidy up worked and they came back, not at hot but still dropped in to the kill zone with no worries. by 1pm we had 100 on the clicker and i had run out of carts as i was only expecting 20 or so birds, that will teach me. off to truck to see what i had kicking around and could only find 50 more. back to the hide and things slowed up a lot more but again, still birds to be had but not as committed as before. my shot ratio went to pot and Norman wasn't far behind me. by 2.30 i had fired my last cartridge for 160 birds on 200 cartridges. i sat back and let norman carry on but after 10 more birds he had enough as well so we called it a day at 170. as we stared taking the hide down we noticed someone walking down the field towards us, it couldn't have worked out better as it was the farmer so while one of my cockers did his job the three of us stood chatting and laughing at birds still trying to drop in. dog was picking up and us 3 stood talking. unbelievable. out came Norman's 20bore and we shot 6 more while packing up. fantastic winters rape shooting and very glad i went out now. Norman, your a star, that's for giving me the boot up the **** and dragging me out, i needed it. 176 birds, dead in field with about 20 more carrying on over the road, for 220 cartridges. I'm now back at home, laid up as i cant feel my legs, the back has popped again and i have beaters day tomorrow. do it care...... .....not on your nelly. thanks guys for reading my ramblings all the best Phil

yickdaz
that is a day on the rape;especially when they are still tightly flocked shame no pics
stripey999
That was a really good read Phil and good shooting seeing as you have been out of practice with the gun due to all the picking up lately. If you had gone out with 250 carts, I bet you would have only had 20 shots. Well done indeed.
activeviii
that is a day on the rape;especially when they are still tightly flocked shame no pics I have one on the phone of the first 50 we shot, they were piled up in the back on matey hide along with any runners i sent the dog out for. the rest the farmer carried up for us so i wasnt going to ask him not to now was i.hehe.
