Billy.
Nice camera, you'll get loads of enjoyment from it. If you need any tips, there are plenty of top photographers on here. Oh and there's a really good guide someone posted on here somewhere.

dunganick
Good first effort. Looks like a great shoot. I hope you dont mind, i thought i would offer some critique to help you get some even better shots next time out. The first one the shutter speed is a bit slow which is why the image is a little blurry (possibly a little out of focus too) The next shot is the pick of the bunch for me, although photobucket has taken a load of image quality out of it, try getting a free flickr account and hosting there. The 3rd shot is out of focus, this might be down to using the wrong AF point (possibly using the auto select method popular on compact cameras), it could also be an issue with using the wrong AF mode. I think the above mentioned guide is one that i wrote a while back, you can find it here: http://forums.pigeonwatch.co.uk/forums/index.php?/topic/110410-request-to-the-photographically-inclined/page__st__30 I hope that some of that helps, and please bare in mind that all crit is given with the best of intentions. Billy.
Just to add to Nick's post. Try to avoid using the 'Auto' setting on the wheel. Go for Av or Tv (Aperture Priority or Shutter priority) and see how much better your photos come out. You'll find the Fstop settings fun to play with, as they'll give your photos a blurry background, the lower the Fstop the blurrier the background. Fishermanpaddy
Nice shots mate. For those Pheasant bombing past you try setting the AF to centre or spot and you should get them in focus no probs. Wish you luck with your new Camera. mart46
Great pics, especially of the pheasant getting it! I found when I first used a digital SLR that in modes A, TV or AV I had to add some "sharpening" to get the pics really sharp. I'm sure you can find how to do this using canons software. Mart You will be leaving the shutter open for too long. More than likely this will be because you've set the F Stop to something above 6. This is great if you want to take of a moving car to give a super blurry background to enhance the speed effect. Not good if you want to take a photo of a dog sat down. None of the dial settings will physically make an image more blurry, it'll just be that the shutter stays open for longer and any shakes in the camera will be enhanced and cause a blurry photo. If you need to leave the shutter open for a bit longer, up the ISO sensitivity and it'll help. Edited January 14, 2011 by Billy.

If you're feeling flush, go Photoshop. If you're not. Go with something that's freeware and basic. As Nick said, get registered on Flickr.com and add me @willandjasper Oh and tell me if you have an iPhone. I'll run one of the above through an iPhone editing suite and you'll probably like the difference - then I'll tell you what to download Edited January 14, 2011 by Billy. Billy.
You can't post flickr images in these threads. You need to paste the actual filename with a .jpeg et al at the end. Flickr is amazing. It'll become your photography companion.
dunganick
You can post direct from Flickr with IMG tags. Above the photo in flickr there is a menu called 'actions' in this menu's drop down there is an option called 'view all sizes'. Find a web suitable size, right click and if your on a mac click 'Copy image address', if its windows then you will need to go to properties and find the source of the image in there. Then copy the address and click on the insert an image button on your post in PW, paste the address in and there you go!
OddJob
Well done for getting out and giving it a go! Slr photography's great fun. Couple of pointers; Get a bigger lens, the sigma 70-300 can be got for under £200 and had a macro function at the end. Look in to the 'rule of thirds' photography tip, makes photos with lots more impact, part of the reason the dog photo works so much. Thirdly, photography is the art of painting with light. You don't know it yet but different lighting is key. Get on some websites\forums (amateur photographer is good) to get ideas. And keep shooting....the camera
