Beardo
it really is a case of the more you spend the better it gets - and to make use of range of a .17hmr - you need to be spending about a grand to get anything worth using. stick to a lamp - you can at least then shoot in daylight as well. al4x
talking of which actually have you tried your super laser thingumy yet NB as i guess that would fit the budget though not exactly night vision
Beardo
Yes. Works well bar one rather large design fault - they don't work if they're cold!
pavman
this one is always a can of worms..... i to have had many thoughts about night vision and even consider getting another complete set up dedicated for the job. However my last early session took care of 2 lamp shy dogs in 15 mins so for now i will wait and see what comes up new on the market and things are changing fast
steve_b_wales
Cobra Merlin monucular with day scope adaptor. Added IR illumination by means of a scope mounted lamp with IR filter. Excellent for up to 150 yards. You must have a parallax adjustable scope though. Steve.

I noticed that Cobra also do a "Nemesis" that has built in IR and sells for around £220, also seen a Nightowl for under £200 but I assume these are all designed primarily to be hand held. I'm wondering how you then convert that to make it work as (or with) a scope.

I'm wondering how you then convert that to make it work as (or with) a scope. The Cobra Merlin is sold with an assortment of spacers that allow it to attached to 99% of all scopes. The Nemisis and Nightowl are not meant to attach to a scope, but are used as a monocular only. The Cobra simply clamps to the back of a scope, so when you look through it, you can see the scopes reticule. As mentioned previously, you MUST have a parallax adjustable scope, otherwise you will have great difficulty in seeing the reticule, if at all. Velocette
In reply to the previous post,,,I've not had much trouble focussing on the reticle,,side PA helps hugely with the very shallow depth of focus that NV seems to have,,in that you are constantly re-focussing on the target and front PA is a complete pain to use. Also,,your hand tends to block the IR illuminator when reaching forwards and then you have no sight picture to focus on.
