SilentKill
Right, as per title, i'm scouting around trying to do a bit of research but my 4x4 knowledge isnt that great (apart from driving a Range Rover Vogue for the firm) Looking to spend no more than £1000, to include a 4x4 and reasonable set of tyres / upgrades needed. Be mainly used as a Shooting vehicle / dog vehicle. Diesel preferable but not the end of everything. I've been looking at the likes of Daihatsu Fourtrak, Suzuki Jimny, Landrover Disco, Vauxhaul Frontera etc. thoughts and recommendations please! garyb
See what you make of my setup in the next week or so... Sub £
Beardo
Have to say the Frontera is a superb shooting wagon, had mine 2 years now and no complaints - the SWB has a removable central roof which makes it superb for lamping as you have support all round. Parts are dirt cheap and easily available and there are some superb forums dedicated to them. Mine's a '98 SWB, 2.0l petrol, did have 75k i think when i bought it - cost me less than a grand. Alex C
At sub £1000 there is a good chance you will just end up picking up someone else's nightmare. If you stretch to around the £1500 mark there is much more about. Failing that keep an eye on E bay or Pistonheads for a last minute bargain. twitchynik
There was a decent looking Fourtrack on here in that price range just before Christmas
al4x
just ignore anyone who suggests a 2 1/4 landrover, they are all insane Jap is the way to go, vauxhall if you absolutely have to they make decent lamping vehicles but the petrol doesn't have the longevity of a decent diesel engine
SilentKill
Ok so were mostly in the opinion that the Vauxhall Frontera is a reasonable buy for the budget? what about tyres for them?
al4x
yep they do work better with tyres as a second vehicle get some chunky cheap remoulds from here http://www.tyresdirectuk.co.uk/ Edited January 19, 2011 by al4x

TJ91
i will throw vitara in there seems to be plenty of mods you can get for them my mate is running about in 1 at the moment not bad at all off road with a set of A/T's limited room in the swb though
ST3V3
if i remember rightly the fronteras biggest failing was when vauxhall did there press release on a beach in wales and all the test vehicle got stuck on the beach
SilentKill
Plus Jeremy Clarkson literally pulled one apart on TV! Garyb, i did notice you had a Frontera on your signature.

garyb
Not really. The 2.0 petrol is cheaper to fix, although more expensive on juice - make sure if has a roof like Nicks.
al4x
the diesel engines actually seem pretty bad problem wise, so though the economy the petrol gives isn't great they do seem to keep running. The vitaras are very good with the benefits of being jap, fundamentally pretty much any 4x4 will do if you put the right tyres on it, at your budget I'd go jap but as a second or third vehicle the frontera is ok
Beardo
AFAIK all the SWBs have the bikini roof. i get about 20mpg from mine, but it is almost exclusively used for shooting
