When and where in the country did this happen? There are some police helicopters grounded due to lack of funds, and most do not fly until a ground force have requested it.

The police are well aware guys are out shooting all the time. This over reaction sounds like a training exercise or who ever phoned in must have made it sound like you were an immediate threat. :hmm: (like looking in windows or the like)

The idea of self regulation by reporting everytime I go out shooting is ******. We are answerable for enough nonsence with out reporting to the police every time we want to legaly persue our sport.

It was only cause a house got robbed right next to the golf course. So I think the people that phoned up thought we were robbers.

I couldn't agree more. I know what I am doing is entirely legal and know also that the law doesn't say I have to let the old bill know when I'm out going about my legal shooting business.

I call to let them know when I'm on land easily viewed by Joe Public to save time and aggro.

At the very least, having half a dozen officers turning up to check reports of "a man with a gun in a field" interrupts the hunting flow somewhat and takes up valuable time.

If you don't mind the swat team turning up and interrupting you if you're in a place that's likely to cause phone calls to the cops, then don't bother informing them. Simple really.

They'll turn up anyway, does anyone really think that the police will take someones word that it is they shooting and not some nutter with a gun??

:hmm: :hmm: so are you patrolling the rurals as a copper?! :yp:

I cover both Town and Rural, but obviously prefer being in the country side!

I know..... :yp: :yp:

What a daft woman! I wonder if she could be done for wasting police time, given the fact she refused to look at your written permission and warrant card?

Really, some people!

Did the police come out Silentkill? :yp:

wasnt on duty, and to be honest i very rarely use my warrant card for anything other than work, but i had already spoken to the control room and informed them i was on site.

but less likely to be a full on Firearms response if you are on the log and contactable....?

dont know any coppers shooting around my area..they struggle to walk the streets! prefer to sit in the panda waiting for any modified car to pass and pull them.

think the police benefit from having people able to see situations from a different perspective working with them. keep it up silent kill! :yp: :yp:

Soooo...

General consensus if you are shooting somewhere that's highly likely to upset someone such as a school then let the police know. Otherwise just carry on as normal as we don't want to make a rod for our own backs further down the line.

However, there have been plenty of accounts on here of people that have had a visit from the boys in blue while shooting despite having phoned in. At the end of the day a hysterical member of the public on the phone + the word gun will often provoke a response further than a 'Don't worry we will see if its Mr Smith' as nobody in a control room would want that coming back to bite them.

Hi Silent,

Have you yourself been seen, reported by a member of the public and visited by your colleagues whilst out shooting, even though you have told them where you are?

Ian.

I'm quite lucky in the fact i only have one permission which is anywhere near what you would class as a public place. And oddly enough i was out at this particular permission which is a golf course last week, where a resident who lives on the course grounds confronted me, and said she was going to call the police. i had already let them know i was on the Course by way of phoning before hand. And i spoke to them again once our conversation had finished with the resident to inform them they may get a call!

as we've gone over before, its not law to call or inform them, just a bit of courtesy to avoid an unnecessary reaction. The Police are not stupid in the fact they do check the logs, and they know the difference between common area's where people shoot and what they would class as a threat to life....!

If i'm shooting my other permissions which are private farms i dont inform the police as they are very rural and remote.

:good:

Did you find out if she actually phoned the police, or was it just an idle threat?

to be honest, it was one of the oddest encounters ive had with a member of the public, She was walking her dog, the dog came running up to us, had a stroke and a play, we were chatting away with her. then she kind of "flipped" as in went from nice to weird, started saying it wasnt right etc. is that a gun? (she had already seen it for the last 5 mins talking to her....) at which point i offered to show her the permission docs, she refused. and kind of backed off and walked away muttering to her self....

it was just a weird situation, so i informed the police they may get a call... and dropped the course manager an email incase they complained? :hmm:

Phone the police to let them know where you are shooting and get the incident number, phone them again when you have finished and quote the incident number, it stops and saves a lot of problems.Plus have all your documents.

bakerboy

Like i am going to do that........... I dont think so, if you are legit you have no requirment to tell plod each time you go out and why should you, but as pointed out carry your documents as in the event you get attention you can show your papers
