al4x
Just heard they are going to merge the two departments, big question is will it cause chaos or become more efficient http://www.borehamwoodtimes.co.uk/news/8810471.Police_agree_gun_licence_merger/
Imperfection
If both regions are to be orchestrated by one particular force then i would say it will be worse due to less actual people in the office. They're on about saving £173,000 so its envitable that job losses are on the cards for them to claw back that sort of money. It also says they're wanting to involve my region Cambridgeshire and if this does happen grants, variations etc might take a long long time. Good job i stuck a variation in a few days ago then... Edited February 4, 2011 by Imperfection
AlistairB
I've just put my FAC forms into Beds Police - hopefully, they'll get through before this happens in March. AB
al4x
apparently they are having an extended Holiday through February while it goes through, that comes from my local gunshop who asked what was going on while the move happened
twitchynik
Could potentially be a pain for me as at the moment I have a short walk round to the cop shop where the local FLO's are and drop the forms off. Hopefully the local FLO's will still be around as some of them are quite easy to get on with
AlistairB
I spoke to Beds on Tuesday, and it all seems normal at the moment - we'll see though, knowing my luck that's bound to change. What are the Herts boys like? Beds are described by BASC as 'accomodating'. AB
PhilR
I was in Bedfordshire from 1977 to 1995 and the FLOs I dealt with were first class and very helpful with no delays in renewals of SGC. Unfortunately the same can't be said of Thames Valley - a combination of Bucks, Berks and Oxfordshire. The FLOs are OK but anything that needs dealing with at HQ such as the renewal of SGC or amendments to the European Firearms Pass take a horrendous time and they have a habit of losing things within the dept. I hope the Beds and Herts amalgamation works better than TV does.

al4x
Herts and beds seem on a par, my brother has been with beds for years and hasn't had any issues. herts for me have also been spot on very little of the silliness that seems to go on elsewhere

SilentKill
Theres a lot of talk about Herts, Beds and Cambs sharing resources etc.... Herts and Beds already share dog / firearm units with each other, but they are not joining forces as such! Bit annoying really, as Herts are a Top 5 in the country force and Beds bottom 5! But millions to be saved from somewhere! personal view, joining them will be a pain....

I hope the Beds and Herts amalgamation works better than TV does. I can't fault Thames Valley and have had my FAC for 30 years. My certificates are due for renewal this March but I received my renewal pack early December, had my visit first week in january then received my certificates 3 days later. This has been the norm for me with Thames Valley and I have always had good service when dealing direct with the HQ by telephone and even visiting them when I needed things done asap. I've heard of horror stories north of the county (Bucks) and this was traced back to one FEO now retired.
Beardo
only really have good things to say about Herts, so fingers crossed. we moved house just before Christmas and from sending my licenese in, they were amended and back with me in a couple of days (as has always been the case with and tweaks to them). Not heard back from my FLO for an inspection of the new property yet though! My FLO changed in the last couple of months due to a reshuffle - which is a shame as i got on very well with the old one (he's still there but covering different area), the newer chap seems ok though. "I would say it's an irresponsible way of going about it because you can't tell what people are like when you're just talking to them on the phone." Err assuming they already have a license as they are renewing? and lets not forget that its not licensed gun owners raiding banks and shops and shooting kids in streets. (obviously i appreciate that you cannot account for one individuals actions or state of mind, and i dont think you will ever be able to tell what they are or are capable of doing by an interview) Edited February 8, 2011 by SilentKill
